New Motor with rebuilt head. Diesel tapping noise heard from the head
Just put in a freshly built motor. 1.6l, scat rods and super tech pistons, rebuilt head.
Here is a video of the noise Noise is louder when the car is called. First oil chage was at 100miles, replaced with 5x30 castrol regular oil. Any idea what the noise could be? |
Having not watched the vid, Im guessing a dry lifter.
Watching vid now. Yeah Im sticking with dry lifter. Dann |
Couldn't really tell much from the video.
Lifter tick is a characteristic of these engines. There have been instances where cam caps were not properly torqued (there was even one member who broke his exhaust cam because of this). Worth checking. Once you've broken the motor in, Rotella T-6 FTW. You really want to be running a synthetic due to the temperature of the bearings in the turbine. |
Can I loosen all the cams and torque them again?
|
Sure. Do a bolt at a time. It's good to know for sure. The guy that had the camshaft problem had just gotten his head rebuilt.
|
Sounds like a dry lifter, mine sounded like it was about to blow and that I had no oil pressure but once warmed up its quiet. But cam bolts are a maybe, I just use a 1/4" ratchet and tighten by feel, I think a torque wrench is over kill sometimes. I had a cam bolt snap once when it was torqued to 10ft/lbs using a torque wrench

May also want to verify that your valve shims are within spec.
|
Yeah, because hydraulic lifters have shims.
n00b. |
^oops, my build made tapping sound due to out of tolerance shims and I had to re-do them -
