Odd stuttering problem

Ok, it's kind of hard for me to explain this problem that I am having, but I will give it my best shot.

Basically what happens is this:

Start the car up, for a few min. till it is warmed up if I give to much throttle, it will stutter a bit, but then accelerate like normal.

From here on out it could run perfectly fine for hours, or the CEL will come on, (for anywhere from 2 sec. to 30 sec. give or take) once it goes away, it almost feels like its running out of gas, it stutters real bad, and has a bit of a miss.

After this, it could go away after one or two blips of the throttle. or could stay for a few miles down the road.

I have gone back to basically a stock Greddy kit (no IC) to minimize failure points.

I got the codes off the car this afternoon, and I got this:

AFM(8), Water Thermistor(9), Ignition Pulse(1), o2 Sensor(17), and TPS(12)

This problem has been going on for a while, i have already replaced the AFM, and the o2 sensor, along with the ECU (got a little wet causing some corrosion). All used.

Sorry for the long post, this problem is super annoying, and can figure it out... I'm guessing its a major electrical problem. Anyone have any idea where to start?

I had a similiar problem, ran like that for a few years, then it got so bad car would stall at stoplights, it was the Water Thermosensor, its a green plug in the back of then engine.

Awesome, thanks for the reply Ill check it out tomorrow.

Would that be causing the car to be throwing all these other codes tho?

Damn you to hell. I was about to post the same question but mine is slightly different as mine only does it on cold start, or after it has sat for more than an hour. N/M, you also said cold start. It will start fine and then after 5-10 seconds whether I touch the throttle or not it will start stuttering and try to die. Poking the throttle at all will only make it bog more. After 10-20 seconds of this is will clear up and run perfectly normal from there on out, until I turn it off and let it sit again. This is especially problematic when I forget it does this and I pull out of the driveway and it does this shit in the middle of the road or in a parking lot. Any amount of throttle will make it nearly die. So I have to fight the throttle for 10-20 seconds until it smooths out and it will go right along like nothing ever happened.

Seeing Kevin's suggestion makes me wonder. When I rebuilt my engine my water temp sensor, the green plug one got damaged. The plug and guts of the sensor pulled away from the sensor jacket and threads. I JB welded it back together and it ran fine for a month or two and then started this shit which it has been doing for a few months now. Maybe my JB weld job came loose. It's worth a shot checking yours too to make sure its working. Not sure about the CEL's though. I will be checking mine this weekend as well unless someone has a better idea. Sounds like a reasonable cause though. I was originally thinking it was fuel injector related.

Sorry, I'm kind of sharing your thread since it sounds like pretty much the same issue (I think)...

No problem on the thread sharing, Im glad I am not the only one having a problem like this, I am going to check the temp sensor when I get home from work today.

Hopefully that is all that is going on with it Kyle... But it does seem strange that it threw all of those codes rather than just the water thermistor code though. So I'm guessing the FMU checked out on pressure? Good luck!

Come on you bastards! Don't make me go talk bad about you people on the miata dotnet. Surely someone has something useful for us.

I'm waiting for a Hustler reply now

BTW, did you check it out when you got home from work?

jtpaintballwdp 10-13-2009 11:15 PM

Unfortunately I didn't have enough day light by the time I got home, I will try tomorrow.

jtpaintballwdp 10-15-2009 10:58 AM

Well its been raining for the past 2 days, and looks like its going too in to the weekend... Ugh.

thagr81 us 10-15-2009 11:19 AM

Sucks to hear Kyle... Hopefully it all gets sorted out this weekend for you though.
