Oil/Coolant Temp large disparity?

My autometer oil temp gauge is showing 240-250f after a bunch of boosted runs and doesn't drop, while the coolant temp shows a steady 190-200f. I'm running an oil cooler adapter with 3/8" ports, thermostat, 3/8" to AN-10 adapters, -10 lines, smallish oil cooler with 1/2" NPT ports. The only thing I can figure is that the thermostat might not be opening up. Any thoughts? thx - rob

Where are you measuring oil and coolant temps?

m2cupcar 12-30-2006 10:46 PM

Oil temps in the sump and coolant temps at the exit of the back of the head. I had an NB with ~180hp na and it ran 225 oil temps and 210 coolant temps at peak.

Thats not really that uncommon.

During HPDE I have seen sustained 250 to 260 oil temps in the sump. No oil cooler, Running 12psi with a long straight that sees speeds of 110 to 120 before hitting the braking zone:skid: I believe synthetic is stable to 300. I always give it a good cool down lap then let it idle a little in the paddock with the hood up, change oil before and after the event.

I'm running synthetic- mobil1. My buddy raced two LS firebirds for 3 years, 10 3 hour races per year using the same oil. The cars ran 300f oil temps the entire race and never had any engine failures, so I've got some confidence in the oil. I was just surprised to see the high temps at idle.

My temp always shows higher at idle, there isn't any airflow to cool things off.
