Oil temp gauge + sensor?
 

I have a chance to buy a Prosport oil temp gauge but I dont know where to install the sender. Right now I have a oil pressure sender block fitting sitting on my desk, but the oil temp sender wont work with it because its to long. It will only work with something like a sandwich plate which I really dont want to use.

Any other place to put an oil temp sender other then drilling the oil pan?

Next question is, I dont plan to track the car so do I really want one?

They're recommended but only so you know if your temps are getting too high.

The other option for installing the sender is to get a oil pan drain plug made to install the probe in. I lost my link to them though.
You can just get a extra drain plug, drill and tap it for your probe though. That would be a cheap option if your mechanic friend can help out.

Damnit, im facing a really good deal and cant decide if I want more headache. Before this came up, I was planning to go without one.

How much could the oil possibly heat up with such a small quantity going through the turbo and not even during hard running conditions.

30* or more without an oil cooler. I don't have my own data to back that up. You said yourself you don't plan on doing any autocross or track racing. I don't think you should bother with it.

If you drilled your pan for the turbo drain, then I'd do it again for the oil temp sensor. That's a good place to find out the temp after the oil has done it's job. IMO oil temp is mandatory for a TURBO track car.

Not a track car. At least not yet, maybe in a year or two after I get a second car.

I am using one of these... It will extend out the port enough to where the sender doesn't block oil flow. You have to slightly enlarge the hole of the adapter to allow clearance for the sender.

I am assuming you have a similar 1/8 NPT sending unit, like autometer 2253

Nah, I got an adapter that fits between the pressure sender and the block and also has two 1/8npt ports in it. I would screw the temp sensor into one of those ports except the sender is to long.

I just ordered an oil temp gauge so i'll need to figure this one out as well.. I know the Evo MRs have a drain plug with the sensor built in, but its nice and clean as the wires swivel and dont stick out much more than an regular drain plug. I'll have to see if the threads are the same as ours. They look alike visually..

I have this, as do many others... but it only threads in about one thread - yikes - I plan to replace it with a 1/8NPT sender in my drain plug.

Though I might just drill a M12x1.25 hole in the pan when(if) I go turbo.

^ Thats kinda interesting, but I don't trust it. Drain plug has to be a plug and nothing more. I think the only way I would do it is drilling the pan. But I think im gonna pass on the gauge that is being sold. Its overkill for my needs right now.

Drilling the drain plug is easy. The wires don't get in the way as long as you route them properly. I've been running like this for two years with out issue. I can't imagine hesitating to modify the drain plug, especially considering you've added a turbo to the car. I find it just as important to know when the oil is cold, I don't get on it until I see the needle starting to move.

I looked at work and we are out of the MR drain plugs. :(

Maby i'll order one and try it out some day.

any tips? Still have this on my to-do list.

Agreed that routing the wire is a non-issue.
