OLOA is going on now. How would you build a Miata?

One Lap of America is going on now. With the underdog hero story of Andy Hollis's CRX still in a surprising #6 position overall, let's bench race.

If you were forced at gunpoint to build a Miata to achieve a top 5 finish in this event, what would you build?

Leafy 05-06-2014 03:37 PM

Install significant bracing in engine bay. Cut/tub/flare/hammer/cut until 18x12 with 315 street tires fit with proper suspension travel and steering angle. Xidas, LSx swap (with cam, heads, tong tubes, intake manifold, etc for 600+ish hp), crazy aero, fastback hard top, custom control arms with sphericals, trailer hitch and trailer.

*Edit, fuck it. Make that 18x14 with 335 Rivals square.

Savington 05-06-2014 03:50 PM

No R-comps make it a moot point. No way to make a Miata competitive without bastardizing it so completely that it may as well be a tube frame car. I looked into it a few years ago.

If a K24 CRX is proving to be fairly competitive, what's stopping say... a K24 Miata from doing the same?

Is the CRX a better car?

I agree that the tire issue is really the big thing keeping a Miata from ever winning outright, which is why i specified Top 5.

Leafy 05-06-2014 04:07 PM

Andy is also good at the whole driving and car setup thing. I would need a significant car advantage to make up for the driver deficit.

concealer404 05-06-2014 04:08 PM

Well sure... This is obviously a theoretical exercise where you have an alien driver at your disposal.

doward 05-06-2014 04:53 PM

Some sort of mashup of 949 Whammy, K24, LSx, boost, 949 BGK, fastback, splitter/wing, has GOT to be faster than andy's crx.

Why wouldn't the 949 R car plus rotrex, a street style Theseus, or any top CSP car with 225 rivals be faster than a K-crx on 225 rivals?

The rules are pretty wide open, street legal and with tires from The Rack, seem to be the only major hindrances:

""Are motor swaps legal?

Yes. The classes are based on what the car was when it came from the factory; not what is has become. In fact, we don't care if you somehow stuff a Allison V-12 into the car. It's your car, your money, you've got to live in it for a week.

What modifications are legal?

Hmmmm, any, or certainly many. Well, the car has to be street legal. This means that we will need to verify that the car is registered, inspected and insured for use on public highways.""

Rotrex K24. Or TSE turbo kit on a nice 1.8VVT. Low 300s WHP

6 speed.

3.90 Torsen or OGK.

225 or 245 Rivals.

Cushy engine/trans mounts.

Graphene Insulation.

Easily Adjustable Aero.

Fancy digi-guage setup.

Some awesome seating solution.

Nice hardtop.

Etc.

I saw Andy today at AMP (Atlanta Motorsports Park), he was wickedly fast - beating pretty much everything except the highly-modified GTR's.

Plus, he's rocking 6UL's - so he's pretty much the closest thing there is to a Miata, lol.

Andy is now in 4th place overall. Still think a Miata can't do it unless it's not a Miata?

Went up to Mid Ohio today and caught most of the morning session and all the afternoon session. What a weird event. They ran in 5-6 groups of 4 cars, out lap/warm up, dead stop at start/finish, launch through an autocross beam style timer and do 3 hotlaps. As soon as that first group is done, they hook up their trailers and roll out.

The tire rule is pretty cool. You get one set from the Tire Rack. They stamp them specifically for OLoA then paint them when you arrive at the first event i guess.

I got to meet and chatted with Andy Hollis and quite a few other drivers/teams. The key to this event seems to be first, be fast. Second, find a way to get quality sleep. They drove through the night from Atlanta to New Jersey on Tuesday night into Wednesday. Lots of guys said they were only able to check in at their hotel, shower, then their wake up call rang from the front desk and they had to leave. Zero sleep on Tuesday night.

Lots of cool cars, 3 GTRs, 2 Vipers, 3 C5s, 1 C7, Ariel Atom, 3 VWs, 3 or 4 Subarus, 3 E36 M3s, 1 e9x M3, 1 e9x 335? 4 door, 1 Mercedes SLS, Chevy HHR SSs, Honda of Alabama brought an Oddesey and MDX...

With sleep being critical, an NB may be the way to go for interior comfort. Drive in shifts. Is that allowed?

pdexta 05-09-2014 01:36 PM

Can you imagine doing that in an Atom? Holy crap.

I was going to be the relief driver for a single-seater... Unfortunately the car wasn't ready in time, maybe next year. It would have been epic and barring any mechanical issues should have been able to podium.

You guys are obviously overthinking this. Step 1, Racelands. Watch a forumula 1 race, they are scraping on the ground, and nothing gets you lower than racelands. If your frame rails aren't throwing sparks, you're not low enough. Step 2, as much negative camber as you can get, at least 6-8°. Then get some 15x12s (0-offset of course) and wrap them in some 195/50s. For saving weight, strip off all your paint and let the car rust a bit, rust is lighter. Style bar. It's lighter than a real roll bar. You need to shift comfortably, so get a really big shift lever. One of your used dildoes is probably best.

This just in: Andy Hollis is moving from the CRX to a K24 powered Miata next year for OLOA.

I saw that. One of his factors is being able to fit big tires. I lol'ed. It can fit big tires with liberal application of the cutoff wheel and welder, about the same amount of effort that it would take on the CRX.

If he goes NB, there's some 17s out there that would probably offer more than what he had on the CRX with fairly minimal modifications.

Leafy 05-12-2014 08:35 AM

Bump travel is still the problem. You can fit up to 315s even on NAs with minimal mods and the right offset wheels, but they had better be 23" diameter or less. Diameter wise NA and NB have basically the same limit, NBs are better at fitting wider 23" diameter tires than NAs with less fender modding needed.
