Oops. Ebay jdm motor?

Rod knock on #4. Oops. Only 12K miles on turbo (37K total!) but all of those miles were very hard. And I think there may have been a timing miscommunication, so I was tracking with over advanced timing across the board. Either way, I want a nice 1.6 motor to swap in while I take my time building my motor. Even if I only get another 12K, its all good.

Are the ebay JDM 1.6 motors ok? Anyone used one? (Years ago, I helped put some in some rx7s and they were great.) How do I guarantee I don't get a short nose crank or noisy HLAs (mine were always loud, always hated it)?

I want a warranty but I would really prefer not to have to use it.

Thanks.

I am also thinking the m-tuned coolant reroute might be a good idea this time around.

ssmith 08-26-2009 09:30 PM

Might be easier/cheaper to just get on locally. Ebay ones are like 600$, and need another 300$ or so for shipping.

Even this might be a better option.

I was going to suggest a local salvage yard as well. Also why not built the block of the one you blew while you're at it??

rotaryjunky 08-26-2009 09:44 PM

No miatas in these parts, I mean no miata parts in these junk yards, and if there was, they would be high mileage and have been under 10 feet of snow for a few seasons. I want to build my engine, but spend a little money at a time so as not to be missed, if you know what I mean, and to limit downtime to a day or two at a time.

buffon01 08-26-2009 09:52 PM

Damn that sucks I didnt look at your location. Good luck finding a replacement though

crashnscar 08-26-2009 11:26 PM

JDM motors are supposed to be higher C/R than USDM.

rotaryjunky 08-26-2009 11:30 PM

Do you know how much higher?

crashnscar 08-26-2009 11:37 PM

Nope, I just know there have been Spec Miata guys who illegally run them.

Braineack 08-27-2009 08:51 AM

I call BS on CR.

Anyways, my imported motor was a POS that had horrendous blow-by which comsumed about 1qt every 500 miles. It only lasted nearly 2 years to the date from install. The pistons ultimately melted....

So what your saying is that it is a crap shoot, like all my other options. At least I will have control over my own engine build up.

So far $819 shipped engine and trans.

BTW, car still drives great, just starting to not sound so good.

Braineack 08-27-2009 09:13 AM

Yeah I was not very pleased with that motor. But the head off that motor on a random block has lasted another good 2 years without issues.

rotaryjunky 08-27-2009 09:22 AM

My salvage yards can get me...

58K $925
70K $850
34K $1800

All 1.6s. No accessorys(fine), no extra transmission.

Braineack 08-27-2009 09:24 AM

wtf? intense.

Have you searched car-part.com? You can get one from there for $300 while you build up your other engine. A JDM engine in nothign special, especially if you are going to take it right back out after you build the other engine. It will be a huge waste of money.

rharris19 08-27-2009 09:35 AM

damn beat me to it

jmack 08-27-2009 09:38 AM

Sucks that there is no one local who can source a cheap engine and do the work.

Found a guy up here who imported salvage cars from the US, some Miatas among them. So I got a long nose 1.6 with 140k (km) for $300, new 1.8 clutch everything installed and working for $750. The engine isn't anything special but for that price who cares.

rotaryjunky 08-27-2009 10:02 AM

All of those engines are two hundred miles away, which is fine but I don't seem to have any time anymore now that my wife works, not complaining, I think. I am going to try a local yard where I know someone who.. and see if they can deal.

tyson87 08-27-2009 10:03 AM

I had a local shop do a main engine seal on my van and I am still finding shit they messed up or just broke. My alternator started whining and it was because it was just sitting in the engine bay not even bolted on because they had busted off one bolt inside the thread and the other bolt worked its way out. I'll need help, but I want to be there tightening stuff.

rotaryjunky 08-27-2009 09:50 PM

jdmtigerjapanese has jdm engine/trans for $725 shipped with 90 day warranty. Any last thoughts? I am waiting on a pm though.

Nagase 08-29-2009 01:29 AM

I've been trying to sell my 1.6 with 116k on it for 250$ around here, and no one has been buying it. :/

rotaryjunky 08-29-2009 08:39 PM

I've decided to order from chicago. $625 shipped. And at least I can drive it back if its bad.
