painting car, looking for ideas

This past weekend I removed the engine and transmission and I'm going to start getting the car ready for paint. The car is red but I'm not a huge fan of red Miatas. Instead of painting the whole car another color i was thinking of doing a 2 tone. Maybe a black hardtop, hood, and around the windshield. Another idea I had was to try and find a slightly darker shade of red. At least the door jams and trunk would not look too out of place. Anyway I'm open to ideas. What would you do?

Keep it as close to the original color as possible. Otherwise it will look like a shitbox and the resale value will not be worth a fuck.
But, that's just my opinion on it.
Whatever you do, use a BC/CC system on it. Base Coat/Clear Coat. Deeper in color and richness. Also doesn't fade and get chaulky.

I saw a dark red/burgundy NA. It was a really striking color for the car. I don't care for teh tomato red either.

No reason why you couldn't do both. A darker red with black stripes or a black 2-tone would look great. If 2-tone, I'd do a flat or satin black myself.

It's a Grassroots Motorsports project. I'm going for cheap, shiny, somewhat interesting, and not pink! I should have mentioned that first, sorry.

get a candy apple red... or maybe a sunburst (red and orange mix)

Hell, for a quick cheap GRM car paint job, I'd prep it myself and take it to Maaco. Then spend some time wet-sending, buffing, and polishing.

I've always wanted to paint a car with that chalk board paint...and draw on it.

hustler 05-11-2007 10:06 AM

yeah, you can probably buff all of that out.

Newbsauce 05-11-2007 10:43 AM

My thought is this.. paint it a color that isn't OEM miata. Honestly I'm not a fan of the OEM miata colors. I think flat black is a cool color..and very easy to do. I plan on painting mine toyota "Speedway Blue" next year.

Braineack 05-11-2007 10:48 AM

I'd roller paint it "fire" red. and put a big miataturbo.net sticker down the side.

Anything but BRG. Spicy orange would be cool.

My buddy has painted his '91 Jetta with both black and green chalkboard paint. It was inevitably covered in penises each time while parked in our high school parking lot.

yeah, that's why I added pearl to mine. Green sucks, but I didn't care to spend the money or deal with the pain in the ass of painting it another color.

go candy apple red over a fine gunmetal flake. like a deep black cherry.

miatamania 05-11-2007 02:39 PM

^ Now that would be sweet

jayc72 05-11-2007 03:15 PM

Adding perl to it doesn't make it any less queer, in fact ... ;)
