Painting my NB

Hey there all... Getting ready to shoot my black 99 in a new color using Dupont's Nason Urethane paint this weekend... going to be a budget job with single stage but have had good luck with this stuff in the past.

Have a sanity check question to ask really quickly... The body is in fine shape and I am throwing on new bumpers already primed in black... the car itslef is black and I'm not adding any bondo or crap like that... It's hopefully going to be a straight shoot in color this weekend but have doubted myself.

Okay, so in essence the car is one solid color and I am thinking about scuffing the original paint... cleaning it with prep-solv and then shooting the new 8C6 orange over factory color. Do you all think that a primer is necessary in this instance or should I prime the car first? My worry is that the primer is thick and will require a piss-load of sanding. I don't know how well I can keep it level and don't want waves and dips from the sanding of primer...

Does anyone here have experience with this? It's been 10 years since I spent time near a body shop and I know that paint has changed since the last time I shot something. So I'm reaching out to yall for some help...

What do you think? Should I skip the primer and just paint over the OE paint or what?

Thanks all and cheers,
Prospero

for my money i would clean scuff and spray and it should turn out fine. its not like we still have laquer paint jobs around like in the 60's and 70's most urethanes should be pretty compatible. If it realy worrys you then try a inconspicous spot somewhere and see.

Wet sand 600 and paint... I would do two stage but that's just me

Ohh, this poor car got hit in the rear... then i was pushed into a concrete wall which f'd the hood, fender, bumper, headlight... (deep breath) control arms, break line, wheel, sway-bar, end link, strut, ohh... and a few other little things... :)

Car was totalled by insurance but since I had just installed a MSM 6SPD and pulled the auto, had the turbo all nice and tuned... and a bunch more work... I wanted to keep the car. So here we are a year later and... car is sans turbo (hence the new yellow toy) but I felt that I owed it to myself to make this car good again. :) Sooooo, 2 new bumpers, 2 new doors, 2 new headlights... and she's no longer a 99 :)

I'm insane... yep... confirmed! :)

Progress!

Spent the day tearing down...taping...prepping... and stressing...

Finally about 12 hours later; and as far as I'm gonna go today...here is a teaser!

Gotta wait for the paint to cure before doing much more... don't wanna scuff anything...

Cheers,
Prospero

Matt,

So far I am out $300 for paint... $250 for the new front bumper... and maybe $200 in sand paper, tape, misc hardware... and floor paint to cover-up the fact I hijacked our warehouse to shoot the car in :)

All told, I am well under a grand and burned off 4 days doing it solo. With help and maybe better tools... I'd have had this done in 3 days.

IMHO, completely worth it!
Cheers,
Matt

I like, might have gone a shade or two darker if it was me, but no complaints at all, looks like you did a great job.

EDIT: More orange yata porn:
