Lightbulb Mazda FSM question

So are there any significant differences between 94 & 95 Miata's? I just bought a 94 FSM from eBay.

Thanks,
Chris

Believe me, I have 3 SE-R FSM's, and one for my Jetta. Only one of the SE-R ones stays in the garage, the rest are minty fresh. I have a laptop in the garage, but I'm more comfortable flipping through a book when working on the car.

The one I just bought looks a little used, I'll get a new one to keep in the house eventually.

There are some minor differences between the 95 and then the 95.5 (pre odb-ii changes).... Some of the pin-outs have changed on my car vs the 95 FSM. But for the most part you are good. One other thing will be the wiring to the coils......

Bought a hard copy years ago. Supplemented with a soft pdf copy. Handy to have on the laptop for the "hum I wonder...." while at the office, or sitting at the computer....

How do you ID a 95.5 Miata?

one difference is the oil pressure sender and gauge. 95 i believe is when they started with the one piece sunvisors (like anyone really uses them). the throttle body i believe is slightly different too. cant think of the other differences at the moment but i know theres a couple more.

There's 2 ways to see that. One is the amount of wires coming from the coils. the other, i believe, is the model ECU that you have.

Is there a Miata ECU guide anywhere? Mine is 079700-6021. A google search only returns hits on Russian and Polish sites.

Chris, if your vin is 14000 or higher, IIRC it's a 95.5. Look at the build date.... If it's in the year 95 (not model year) then probably....

Also you can tell, through the harness going to the coils... 4 wire connector, it's a 95.5.....

4 Wire connector.

Ok, so any pro's or con's to a 95.5? IIRC, I've got an extra half point compression. I should probably touch base with DIY and see if it makes a difference to then on the MSPNP.

Basically, everything else should be the same, but some of the wiring. And you won't have the 8.8 to 1 compression. Should be a real 9 to 1....

On my ECU, there's one pin that was supposed to be blank, but it actually had the RPM wire. The spot that is supposed to be the rpm wire is the blank.

Otherwise, things for the Emanage were good....

If you have the 4-wire connector (on same harness as the fuel injectors) to the coils (so you have only 3 wires on the actual coils -- no trigger) than it's definately 95.5.... (I think I might have been a little confusing with the other statement in the last post).

Are the last 7 digits of the vin, the production number? If so, mine is below 14000.

I pulled the coil connector and it is a 4 position connector, and there's a wire in each spot.

It's going to be essentially identical to a 94, and have a few differences compared to a 96.

Borrowed this from over on RandyS' site:

In March of 1995 (VIN 61493) when some of the ODB-II electronics were implemented (i.e. Still OBD-I but the cam angle sensor has an extra pulse for the "limp home "mode) the coil connectors were again changed to a 3 wire connector instead of a 4 wire one (The tachameter wire was removed) If using the later coil in a 94-3/95 car then it requires splicing the earlier connector on and derermining how to tap the tach signal. The coil versions are 90-93, 94-3/95, 3/95-97, 99+
So yeah, no .5 for you probably. <G>

Aha, I did misunderstand Steelrat's explanation of the number of coil plug wires. And yes Ben, it's an R.

Thanks to all.
