Please don't hurt me - Coolant Re-route question!
 

Let me say that I've seen several coolant re-route threads, and I'm guessing it's becoming tiring to most people, because even I am tired of looking at them. It took me ages to finally turbo my car, and I figured once it was turbo'd, I'd do the reroute. SO LOW AND BEHOLD I'm at the reroute stage, and I have what I perceive to be a major problem. Let's look at the picture first:

So It's a 1990 miata with a 97 motor in it. I used the Flyin Miata spacer for the throttle body. Now because of this spacer, my tight radius 90 (which is pushed into the shortened silicone coupler as far as possible) actually rests on the upper radiator hose (in fact it pushes it in a bit). This tight radius has been turned a bit to allow a bit of room (turned towards passenger side of car). I'm not happy with having these two so close, and I'm not happy with having a hot coolant hose warm up my cold side charge pipe. Now I've seen several different setups for the reroute, with the majority going around the intake manifold side. This would appear to be my only real option, since my turbo takes up so much space on the exhaust side. But I really don't think I have a chance in hell of getting a coolant hose around the intake side with the throttle body pushed so far forward. The only thing I've been able to conceive is to buy an aluminum radiator, and move the upper radiator neck as far over as possible (towards the center of the car) to have better clearance...

So folks, any other ideas? Looking back I wish I had just used a 1.8 throttle body, but my motor was from a wrecker and they stripped the thing before sending it to me. At this point I'd also have to get my charge pipe modified if I did move it back... Acks!

I had this issue w/ my cold side IC pipe. I came off the t-body w/ a 45deg elbow (turned towards the passenger side of the car) and down w/ a 90. I couldn't find a rubber elbow w/ a tight enough radius to clear the cold side IC pipe.

Same problem here on my 94 with the Godspeed radiator.

I used coiled wire intended for tubing and looked through the back room of an autoparts store to find the best fitting stock hose for routing around the IC. Used the wire coil inside the tube to keep it from collapsing making the bends tighter than intended. I also cut the waterneck shorter on the radiator and scored around the neck so it holds the tube OK. The M-tuned reroute includes some of this wire coil. Won't help with heat transfer but helps with keeping the tube from restricting flow.

Make sure you don't leave any space between the IC pipe and the throttle body. Butt them up to each other before tightening the clamp. You might also look to see if you have room to cut a little off the end of the IC pipe. If you can take a little off the IC pipe and the radiator neck that can add up to a more workable space.

I have seen people run their reroute under the ex mani. I ran mine over the ex mani and wrapped it.

what is the big spring thing for?

you put it over the hose to prevent it from kinking.

Thanks for the replies folks. I suppose I'll just leave it until the end of august (i'm pulling car off the road then), and I have some time to tear stuff out and have a good look and think about it. I was also thinking if I had an aluminum radiator, I could get a tight 90 welded in place of the upper neck, and have it move right out of the way. I'll see if I can fit a tight 90 off the current plastic neck, and maybe use some smaller silicone coupling to act as a sleeve.

Yep. Inside the hose. Seemed weird to me also but that's how it works. Inside it keeps the hose expanded when bending it ways it wasn't meant to do. Kind of like your contortionist ex-girlfriend.

There are other options!

You can use a 01+ TB which has a different IAC control that allows for more room. Couple that with Advance Auto Parts radiator hose #C71766. This hose has a nice 90* bend right off the bat and the hose on the otherside of the bend is oval shaped allowing for a bit more room by the TB elbow. I don't know if the radiator is actually further away on the NB, but you can get a good idea for how much room there is with the 01+ TB (maybe 99+?)

You can see the hose here (mind you, you'll have to cut it up a bit to make it work...that's what i'll be doing..no biggie)

The upper rad hose actually comes off and goes straight for a moment before turning, the new hose will turn much sooner and have even more room than there is now.

weird, ive always seen them used on the outside...I just use hose clamps at the bend.

Here's how much room I had on my 94 with the Godspeed rad. Tight as hell. Like the OP the IC pipe actually deformed the water hose. I cut the waterneck back some to open up a little room to go around the IC pipe.

Oh, and Doppel? Damn you and your unreal clean shiny engine bay. Is your car hermetically sealed in a museum somewhere?

I have a throttle body off a 1.8 pre 99 that is missing the tps but has the IAC. It needs cleaning but you could have it for the price of shipping from Calif.

If by that you mean my garage at home and the parking deck at work....yes.
