Please help me out here everyone (new)

I am new to the forum and I am looking into trading my 2007 Yamaha R1 for a 1990 Miata. The only problem is that I am not all to familiar with these cars and also the set ups that are good to use. I am looking for one that is something fun to drive and something that I can also mess around with at local Autocross events.

I found this one local to me and I think I may be able to trade my R1 for it. If anyone can help me out with the goods and the bads on the car and also if it is a good deal I would greatly appreciate it.

Thanks

None of the pics on the CL site are opening... but they're linked to a site called "BuyCustomRides" and it says "SERVER DOWN" or some shit.

The phone number listed also returns an RX8 for sale:
http://www.autozin.com/Mazda,67,mode...GA-,25953.html

Tough to make out who the seller actually is. I don't get the feeling he's a dealer, but something isn't quite right with his advertising methods. The ad is well-written, so I'm going to say LEGIT.

I do see that he specifically says no trades.

As for the car, it's appropriately priced for the mods, included a full 1.8 driveline upgrade w/6-spd... so you know the guy did some things right, but I'm going to guess it's pretty ricey. Without pics, tough to tell much more. If it's in good cosmetic/mechanical shape, then $6k is a great starting point. I'd HAVE TO KNOW what clutch was in it, and the black+chrome wheels are probably heavy as fuck, but it would be a no-brainer at that price with a hard-top if the clutch and wheels are legit... if you decide you want it, offer $4500 and let him talk you back up to $5000-$5500.

EDIT: Just found links for that same phone number for an FX35 and a 2006 MX5 at some funky online-sales place... looks more and more like a dealer, although it could be the guy's personal car.

I have talked to the owner through email and he seems to be interested in my bike for a trade. I have asked to see pictures of the car so I also hope that it isnt ricey because that wasnt my plan for this car if I was able to get it. I do know that it is a soft top.

What clutch is good for these cars? I am still looking into everything on it. I have been reading a few post about the turbo on that car and I have seen a few mixed reviews on it. Some say its great and others say its shit. What is your opinion on that set up?

Once I find out more information on the car I will post it all here. Thanks for the quick response. This deal may come together as soon as tomorrow.

The pics worked for me, the thing is flat black and looks kinda ricey. Blacked out windows, holy crap. Interior is pretty rough looking also. The wheels look very beefy and there is no hardtop. But it seems like a good deal, he's done alot of good to the car with the swaps and all that. I guess it also depends on what your bike looks like...

Meh, I'd pass and buy a stock car on the cheap.

guncrazy72 06-03-2011 05:52 PM

This is the first time the pics have been back up so I can finally get a look at them as well. Damn, it is ricey looking. How much do you all think it would be to change that ground effects kit out and just buy a stock set? The interior dosent seem to bad except for the tear in the drivers side seat. That dosent bother me to much because I was planning on pulling those out and going with another brand anyways and also doing a roll bar.

My bike is in great condition with a few mods but I did drop it in the driveway once but the frame slider saved it so there is only small marks on the fairings.

I love the A/C and PS were removed to "make room for turbo."

Wonder what kind of hack job the turbo is?

guncrazy72 06-03-2011 06:46 PM

I have talked to the owner more and he has now posted additional pictures on his add. Thanks for the help everyone. I am still looking into it.

Bond 06-03-2011 06:57 PM

I hate when people don't post underhood shots on a modified car. Like, really? Are we supposed to guess?

Also, paying 6k for a 21 year old car does not add up.

guncrazy72 06-03-2011 07:03 PM

I may go and look at the car tomorrow after I do a ton of research tonight. What would you say realistically is a good price for that car? The owner said depending on the condition of my bike that he might would put cash with it as well.

Here is the info for the clutch and also the flywheel.

ACT Heavy Duty Clutch Kit and the flywheel is a 9.5lbs aluminum flywheel

My advice, just hold out and find a nice stock car.

Its a dodgy boy racers ebay version of a real miata. Buy a cheap one, enjoy it while learning on here for 6 months while saving. Build your own.

What do you mean by that?

What are problems with the car that everyone sees besides it being ricey looking and the tears in the seat? Yeah the engine bay is dirty but that just needs a cleaning. Im going to look at the car and I think if I can trade my bike and get a little money back with the car I may do the trade. From doing research it already has a few nice components on the car. I am very mechanically inclined so working on it wouldn't be a problem for me.

Id probably pull it all apart to see what is really on the internals and then replace everything that is either bad or going bad. I was amazed by how simple the rotary motor is. I have rebuilt a LS1 and this motor looks like it can be pulled and rebuilt in a day.

guncrazy72 06-04-2011 09:42 PM

Go ahead and flame on,

I traded my bike for the car and also was able to get some cash as well. Ever thing on the car seems to be installed correctly. The outside needs some work and the inside dose as well but I plan on changing it a good bit and in the future have a track/street car. I am glad I decided to get a Miata. Its a awesome little car to drive and it sure dose handle well.

I look forward to learning a lot from this forum. Thanks for all of the help from everyone in this thread.

THIS IS WHY WE SAID TO STAY AWAY.

You just bought a train wreck. You will need to spend money and a lot of time on new parts, because the parts now are complete junk. Running 12psi with no engine management, and no, the Apexi fc is NOT a proper tuning unit for the miata.

That car is running on borrowed time.

I am real new to this site. Like you I came here looking for advice
Unlike you the advice i got I took it did not matter if I like it or not and kept quite about it
You ask and all of these guys told you to run from it,if you are not willing to listen then why ask for the advice
Then to turn around and jump on them is just as rude no one flamed you in any way
They strictly did what you ask of them
Now ,do you really think the folks on her ethat know what they are doing will be as willing to help the next time
The things you have done in this post is what makes it hard on all of us new guys
you ask for advice and then bash the people that give it and then you will be whining and crying cause the next time no one will help
Please, if you do not want to heed what they say then say nothing don't make it hard on the rest of us
