Please help my car overheated
so I was driving home from work with the radio on, then all of the sudden my radio started to flicker... soon after that my battery signal came on and my water temperature shot through the roof, I immediately pulled over and allowed my car to some time cool down. I started to inspect the car belts but they all seemed to be on just fine, I did notice one thing... i can move the water pump belt by hand as in rotate it separately from the PS/AC belt . so my theory is the whole crankshaft pulley separated and the water pump or alternator isn't getting rotated as it should be. has anyone ever had this problem or have any idea on how I should approach this.

Year of car? If it's an early NA, chances are you just experienced the dreaded short nose crank failure.

When you are rotating the water pump / alternator belt, does the corresponding section of the crank pulley rotate with it, and if so, does the center of the crank pulley also rotate? If the answers are yes , no, then your crank pulley needs to be replaced. I've never seen a SNC failure which allowed the water pump / alternator belt to turn without also turning the P/S / aircon belt, assuming that the belts are properly tightened. |
I was going to post SNC failure as well -- or at least you lost the alternator belt.

Well how i saw it yesterday the PS and AC kept rotating like normal and the water pump belt was rotating as well but a bit slower I am going to tighten the belt to see if that will help...Now that I think about it I did a quick Alternantor test yesterday which was unplugging the battery while the car was on .. the alternantor failed to keep the car alive so im assuming the alternator is not getting rotated enough .

By the way my car is a 1993

A 1993 wouldn't be subject to the "dreaded short nose crank failure" though. Crank pulley delamination sounds like a probable suspect.
