Plug and Play IGN1A Ignition Kit from AMP EFI/DIYAutoTune
Recently, I was able to get my hands on a pre-release kit from Ben @ DIYAutoTune of their new IGN1A PNP ignition setup. I was super stoked to check it out, and wasted no time getting it installed. Here are my thoughts of the kit so far below, and most importantly: Pictures!
I've used everything from stock NA/NB1 coils, FAB9's horrible kit :bang:, Toyota COPs (they look great but lack ompf and I've had coils die on me), and an LS Coil kit from FlowForce. I even have some VR35 coils and materials to make a harness, if I choose to go down that route..... I was never quite satisfied with any of these options - the LS Coil kit came close, but I suffered spark blow-out until I re-wired for sequential and relaxed my dwell table a bit. It seemed to run okay like this - but it was at this point I realized how difficult it was to find quality genuine replacement coils should I need to, outside of junkyard options with untold mileage/usage. It doesn't help that our boosted 4 bangers require much more ignition effort vs the NA 8 cylinder truck engines they are native to. I recently picked up some IGN1A coils for my RX7 - I was impressed with the quality, and highly enamored with the fact that I can pickup replacement coils from dozens of (reputable) online retailers if I needed to. So when I saw this PNP kit for the Miata platform - I was super excited to have a high quality, high output option! BLUF: I am very impressed with the fit and finish of this kit. All the connectors and harness sheathing are super high quality, everything seems to be well thought out, and the instructions are clear and concise (for the most part). I went ahead and wired for sequential off the bat since I already had wires ran for my previous kit - everything fired up and idled smoothly after install. While I haven't put these coils through their paces yet, I have noticed easier firing when cranking, more responsive throttle tip-in, and a smoother idle vs the LS Coils. Subbed with interest on how this runs. I, too, have been a bit disappointed with my GM coil installation. Though better than the stock NB1 coils, the aftermarket supplies leave much to be desired.

Today I was able to give it a good thrashing on a ~120 mile round trip between NY and NJ :bang:.
Very impressed - no hesitation at all on WOT power runs, smooth as silk. What was most impressive to me was how well it handled rolling into the throttle at high load/low RPM. Just to test it out I did about 70-80% throttle in 5th gear from about 1300-1400 RPM - no stutter, no hesitation. DIY recommends 3ms fixed dwell for these coils - It seems a lot of folks run much more dwell on these coils, however. An item of note I should mentioned - I use a Pi dash as my gauge cluster which is connected directly to MS.
After installing this kit - I've been having quite frequent disconnects in TunerStudio. I need to verify my serial > USB wiring is still okay - |

Of that, I am unsure. I believe they'll be making some adjustments with pre-production feedback ahead of release.
As an update to the MS connection problems - it appears to have been an unrelated issue. Testing with a spare adapter I saw no disconnects - I believe the serial cable came loose (the adapter I was using didn't have mounting bosses). |

Got my setup installed and wired in. Fit and fitment was great. Hoping to actually get the car started in a week or two. I am glad to finally have a good high quality coil setup available. The price is a bit high, but worth the quality of it all. I am coming from a FM LS coil setup. I can say the only place I saved money over the new MaxSpark was in initial coil purchase price. I have had to grab a few sets from the junk yards over the years though. We really focused on 'well thought out, high performing, reliable quality' and not 'how cheap can we make it' when designing this kit. We made the bracket fit cars with and without VVT, and with an without a strutbar. The wire harness doesn't have corners cut but is dead sexy, which almost makes it sad to tuck it, which it is designed to allow you to do. It just plugs in for the most part, with two ground and a power wire to bolt up to easy to reach locations that the harness perfectly reaches and the docs guide you to. What I do know is nobody could do it cheaper themselves and make it as nice as a one-off unless they value their time at about $1/hr, and then they'd only save a few bucks max. These things rock. We're excited about the new productline, and this is just the first offering. Other cars/engines will be offered soon. In fact, one of them very soon.... |
These look interesting. Are these PNP to MSlabs MS3 basic or does it require require a separate circuit (TC4427A) like the Flowforce R8 coil kit since those coils draw high current.

Any reason for separating the two grounds into separate ring terminals?

If it works with the stock harness and ignition system, then yes it should work no problem. We use dedicated power and ground feeds for the high current power needs, with a dedicated fuse/relay. So it's plug in a few plugs, connect two ground lugs and one 12v+ lug that are pre-terminated and proper lengths to reach easy to access spots on the motor and fusebox (for 12v, we use the big lug there) and you're ready to fire it up. The PNP drop on harness takes care of all of that.
