Problem with starter motor?
Guys,
Just looking for some help with a starting issue. The problem is that sometimes I get the solenoid click sound (and fuel pump) but no start. Some times i have to try 2-3 times other times it could be 20x. Needless to say this is getting kind of annoying now. I think I read somewhere this is a common problem? I am unsure if it is related to a kill switch I installed over the winter or if it is related to something else. Any ideas on what to look into or what the common problem is exactly would be appreciated, I will probably head outside soon to bypass that kill switch to see if that makes a difference. but thanks again for any ideas. |
well it could be your ignition switch as well, I know that I had this issue recently in my 97' and when I changed my ignition switch the issue went away. However every once in a while i have to turn the key two or three times as opposed to how it was before where it would start anywhere between the first try and 20 tries.

I would check the ignition switch and pull and replace the starter have the old one tested if ti is good keep it for a spare with the age we have on our cars it is good insurance. + a starter is less than 100$

whatever, forget the switches. it's 99.99% the starter bendix unit is worn out. go find a cheap starter with a lifetime warranty from the local parts shop.

This happened to me, replaced the ignition switch with a cleaned, regreased switch. Still happens occasionally, only takes < 5 times before it starts, next up is the starter, I figure it's worn and time to go, just too lazy to replace it myself since I don't have a garage.

I had a sticking solenoid (bendix drive) on my cheap lifetime warranty starter. When the key was turned, you'd get a clicking like the battery was dead and then in a couple of seconds the solenoid would actuate and the starter gear would engage. Then car would then start right up. Rough on the gears.

Sounds like the starter to me.
I have both a good starter and ignition switch if needed. |
Thanks for the help guys, I guess I was lucky, I disconnected the kill switch and everything was fine again. Looks like the wire i originally used was too thin :gay:
anyway used some nice 12 gauge and all is good... |
I had a similar problem too. I also assumed it was the starter and swapped it out to find out it still did it. Turned out one terminal of my "S2000" start button wiring/ignition switch wiring had melted a little (long story short...don't take your car to state inspections, they may try to load test it on the front wheels. Fuckers.).
