PWM Sequential Shift Light

I made a sequential shift light using PWM outputs on my MS. Any tips on how to tune the PWM would be appreciated.. as of right now, the greens come on at 102kpa at 10% DC 250hz, up to 50% DC by 180kpa, so it's basically a "boost meter" in light brightness. 50% on the greens is about as bright as 100% on the others.

The yellows come on 100%DC at 11hz at 5k rpm, and the reds come on at 6k rpm, both the red and yellow switch to 50% DC at 11hz, so they flash very quickly when it's getting close to "shift time".

I need to drive it a bit and see how quickly I climb through everything, and see if I should change the revs, or maybe make them come on solid earlier and then flash later... Idk.

Anyways, here's the install!

Measured 20 holes 1cm apart, and started putting in lights.

More lights in.

One damned light went out after installing everything. Not sure what happened, but I've tested the wiring and it's good. It's also super duper super-glued in place. Fuhhhh. :vash:

Installed. It's very clean, they're very non-intrusive.

It's much easier to tell the difference in color IRL.

Total cost: $12 for leds, resistors, wire, resin, etc. (plus megasquirt lol)

kinda cool, i never would have thought of using PWM to "tune" the brightness. I would have just used 3 simple 100% outputs.

Thanks. I was originally going to use the programmable outputs on/off, but the PWM is super nice. I need to adjust the brightness and stuff, and I like the option of making the greens get brighter with more boost, and switching from "solid" to "flashing" at 11hz as I get close to redline.

It looks like you're enjoying the MS3, nice!

Nice DIY. Can you please post a video of the system once you get the settings tuned pretty well.

I love it, and I love you. :makeout:

Seriously though, you do amazing work, and the MS3 is awesome.

I've been meaning to look into making my MS1 turn on a shift light at a trigger RPM. Haven't gotten around to looking it up yet.

It's really very easy assuming you have any PWM output pins accessible. VVT, Nitrous/Nitrous2, FIDLE, I think even your EBC pin can be used if you don't have an EBC.

Just hook 12v+ to the lights, then ground them through a PWM pin (there's a whole list of them somewhere) and then program the output in tunerstudio (for me it was under Advanced/Engine or something like that, may be different for your setup).

And yes, video will be coming later today. :)

you think WAYYYYYYYYYY too highly of MS1.

nice example brain. I was more interested in LED location from driver's POV and brightness for both day and night time. Will you be adding a dimmer of some sort if it is too bright at night for street driving.

Nice simple solution. I like it. If you want to make it a bit more progressive look into a LM3914 LED driver.

I need to setup something like that on my AEM. Using the CEL as a shift light works on the street, but for the track it's hard to see.

Love this. I really wanted this in my WRX, I am going to have to put this on my list for the Miata this winter!

Expect a PM in 5 - 6 months ;)

Sounds good. Let me know if you want to see it in person. My girlfriend and I are in the twin cities quite a lot. I have lots of friends over there, and our car club works very closely with the Minnesota Autosports Club.

Actually, I'll be there on Aug 2 picking up an ALU radiator for the Miata.

Shooting you a PM

Updated OP with video. I'll link it here, as well.
