rear clunking on deceleration

Driving to work this morning in gridlock traffic my car suddenly started making a loud clunking sound at a constant speed or on decel. On accel there is no sound and no sign of an issue. From what I can tell everything appears fine (still sitting at the gas station waiting for a tow). This started when slowing from 15mph, I doubt I went over 25% throttle on the drive, although it did have a tough weekend of some spirited driving and autocross. Anybody want to play the "guess whats broke" game?

Thought I'd add... the sound is speed dependant (quicker with more speed) and occurs in all gears, neutral, and reverse.

driveshaft bolts? diff mounts? exhaust hitting something? turbo hit block?

FRT_Fun 01-09-2012 11:05 AM

I had this same thing, and it went away. I though my diff was done, but it looked good. Still have no idea what it was.

So I tightened the lug nuts on the driver's rear and it seems to have resolved the issue... I'm retarded... Carry on.

How loose were they? You may have dodged a hell of a bullet on that one.

pdexta 01-09-2012 01:04 PM

I jacked it up wiggled the wheel and it felt like a bad wheel bearing. I took the wheel off, spun the hub, wiggled it, everything seemed fine. I put the wheel back on, and it felt normal. Drove around, everything was fine.

I used an impact gun to take the wheel off, so I'm not even sure they were loose, but that seems to be the only explanation.

I just had the wheels powdercoated and the coating is coming off the wheel where it mounts to the hub. I keep wanting to blame the issue on that but it seems like a stretch. At any rate, I certainly lucked out. I can't imagine a wheel falling off would be an enjoyable experience.

I know from experience, it is not a fun time.

Glad it was simple, but you might want to compare the lug 'holes' with another wheel to be sure they are not wallowed out.

I'm ashamed to say this, but that's happened to me before as well. I caught it before the wheel fell off, thank god.
