Rear end questions
I was reading on the .net about rear ends. A post said 99'-00' cars (non 6-speed) came with a 4.30 rear end. Is this true? Would the rear end be as strong as the torsen? I have no complaints of the 1.6 ratios, I just dont wanna blow it up.
if its a 7'' rearend its stronger than the 6''. 7'' rears are in 1.8 cars (open or lsd) and 6'' are in 1.6 cars (vlsd/mazdaspeed ect) Remeber the diff itself is not the weak part, its the ring and pinion gears that go.
But do the 99'-00' cars have the 7" with a 4.30 ratio? After reading about 30 threads about rear ends I couldn't find the answer. But I do know about what fails, what years have what. Pretty much everything but the one thing I want to know, go figure:vash:

my wife's '99 had that.

Yes you did. Didn't mean to imply you didn't answer anything. Sorry. I'm just sort of frustrated from reading so many old threads with the same info in them.
KFJ, you wifes 99' had a 4.30 7" rear end?
pretty certain.
I wouldn't mind a 4.10 to bring the revs down about 200rpms in 5th gear
I rarely drive on the freeway, maybe once a month at most. So I have no complaints with the 4.30. I just want a 1.8 dif to handle the power. But the few times I was on the freeway I agree, those extra 200 rpm's would be nice.
YES! Its confirmed that the 99'-00' difs are 7" torsen with a 4.30 rear end. Looks like I need to find one now. I have only seen one miata in the junkyard. It had caught on fire and had no useable parts....I need to find one.
why would a fire destroy the dif driveshaft etc?
all the boots were melted and the fluid was NASTY looking. I'm not even sure what year that car was. VERY bad shape.
Wait only 99-00 had the 4.30? Aw... that means my parts from an 01 is the 4.10? ah well.

You'll start appreciating the 4.10 as you up the power so don't be too disappointed.

I really want a 4.10 or 3.93 when I convert, first gear is useless with a 4.30
I enjoy my 3.90, keeps RPM low on the highway.

I'll trade you my 93' viscous 4.30 for your 99' torsen 4.30:)
Interesting
Lol... from some more research... its the 99-05 5spd cars that have the 4.30 rearend... not just 99-00.
And no... I won't trade my 01 rearend for a 93 viscous... i have that already :p. |
Oh come on, torsens are lame. Everyone knows viscous=high performance!
....well, its worth a try right? |
I certainly don't have any problems with VLSDs, per se (300ZX used one, S5 RX-7 Turbo II used one, etc.)...just the little teensy 6" one that comes in the Miata.
Agreed. Stupid little 6". I'm glad I respect my clutch and refuse to launch or drop it. When I first bought my car I didnt know about the rear being weak. I bought it on a whim and only problem I knew of was the short nose.
My friend bought an 86? non turbo RX-7, dropped his clutch ALL the time and launched whenever he could. Sheared the teeth off the right side axle. That car is still sitting in his back yard. Last time I checked, it didn't start and had some form of animal living in it. Sad really... |
I got a 99 torsen 4.3....love it. With the Greddy, you need to be more revvy anyway (that and it doesn't mess up your speedometer readings). If I had a ball bearing turbo, I would opt for the 4.1 rear....but most don't get a choice. When the 6" blows, your not too picky for which 7" you get.
