Is a rear section of a roll cage ok for street?
 

I have a guy offering to sell me a roll bar that appears to be just the rear section of a hard dog roll cage. Will this be terrible for street driving? Will the passenger seat be at an uncomfortably forward angle? Will the section above the drivers seat be actually above my head? Bad idea?

I have a 91 that is exclusivley street driven.

Terrible in what way? Because the hoop goes all the way to the floor it likely sits slightly further forward than a roll bar hoop. This has its pros and cons - roll bars are bit further back so they have to be shorter to clear a hardtop. This hoop is probably higher than a roll bar would be (good), but then it's closer to your head (bad). This would definitely need dual-durometer roll bar padding for soft-tissue. But then really, all roll bars need this if you aren't going to wear a helmet every time you drive the car.

Will the passenger seat be at an uncomfortably forward angle?
You can leave the seat at the same recline angle as before and just adjust it to sit further forward on the sliders. Probably 4-5 inches. Your 6' 2" friend will not be happy. Your 5' friend won't mind.

Still behind your head, but closer than a roll bar. see above.

PS I also have a hardtop, do these work? according to the seller it does.

Not to come off as rude, but these all seem like great questions for the seller of the bar. I'm sure they have all of the info that you're looking for.

Seller got the bar in the car when purchased. Doesn't know what kind of bar it is, etc. He obviously wants to sell the bar, I figured it would be better to get un-biased opinons.

Since I couldnt even find this bar anywhere online that wasnt part a full cage, I asked questions here.

It looks like it has padding on the bar already which definitely ads value. Ask the seller what kind it is. As the other Ryan says, you will lose leg room at full recline. Personally, that wouldn't be a deal breaker for me, but it's entirely dependent on your situation.
If it were me, I'd scoop it up if the price was significantly less than say a harddog sport because I like the extra height and I rarely have passengers. My $.02.

I've got a Hard Dog street cage in my Red car. The main hoop of the street cage is in the same location as Hard Dog's regular hardtop-compatible roll bars. Passenger seat recline will be curtailed, but not an issue for normal driving. You should be able to sit in the passenger seat and judge for yourself.

Bottom line, I think it's fine. Would be nice if the welded receptacles for door bars are still there -- you could fab yourself a door bar which adds nice stiffness.

They're made as SM legal cages, which mean hardtops are required to fit too. It may require you to use plates to bolt your hardtop on, instead of latches.
