Rebuilding a diff

Is this easy to do? How easy is it to set the backlash for the pinion gear? I'm just curious because i'll be changing my 1.6L diff for a 1.8L unit. I have everything except the diff itself. Right now everything is in pieces because the owner i bought it from sold the torsen diff. Got everything else for $100, so i scored on that part. Just gotta find a diff for now. Anyways, goin back to the point, is it easy to put together?

you'll spend as much in parts to do it yourself as you would to pay someone to do it.

swapping meatballs is cake. takes about 15 minutes to set backlash if you have a dial indicator and a 8" span caliper with long jaws.

I dont know where you buy your parts but that is definately not true.

Its pretty simple once you get the hang of it, like y8s said you need a dial indicator, and this paste stuff you use to check the actual wear pattern on the teeth. It just takes some time the first time to get everything into spec..

So this doesn't seem that hard. I think i'm gonna replace all bearings since its already all apart. Time to get somemore new tools!! woo hoo

Anyone happen to have the specs on what the tolerances should be? I like to attempt to do everything myself, just a good way to save money on other stuff.

I'll try to upload the specs later tonight if I get a chance. What diff are you rebuilding? I assume you'll need the 1.8 specs.

I have a 96 1.8L. I'm having trouble finding the bearings for the diff and pinion shafts in Hawaii. It really sucks in some ways to live here!!
