removing rear axles?
ight, so im having a bit of a problem.
I cant get my fuckin axles splines to budge from the hub, i have been beating on these fuckers for the past hour and a half! :vash: needless to say im quite pissed! is there somthing im missing? i have soaked everything with PB blaster, the axles are disconnected from the diff and the axle nut is off the end of the spline..... my head is bout to splode! :crx: EDIT: i just realized i put rear in the title, damn i feel dumb |
GAHDAMN! these mother fuckers are stuck in there...
|
How big of a hammer are you using?
|
pretty fuckin big! looks like a mini sledge hammer!
i pretty much gave up and decided that i will be removing the hub and axle in one peice and getting a set of used hubs when i go to pick up my axles.... |
Try a bigger hammer.
|
to get mine out when i did the 1.8 upgrade, i used a full size axe (the blunt side)
stood back and full arm swings took about 10 hits. this was for a no-rust situation... if your car is rusty at all you will need to do some work.... |
remove entire hub/shaft, take to machine shop, have them press out, win
|
Don't mushroom the end, BTDT.
|
Take it to a machine shop. I ruined one axle doing it the hard way. We kept getting a bigger hammer till we ended up using the BFH and just shroomed the hell out of the shaft. Make sure you use anti seize when it goes back together again.
|
no doubt ill be using some anti seize or somthing, im gonna give it another shot tonight when i get home!
|
if its rusty, you could try impact hammer. for some things they are just magic.
http://www.harborfreight.com/media/c.../image_222.jpg definitely put the axle nut on (reverse direction) so you don't shroom the axle (as mentioned above). |
i has no air compressor though! :(

You did remove the axle nut, correct?
|
it may not be a good tool practice, but you can put the nut on as far as you can with a little visible gap between the nut and the hub, put the socket and a long extention on and hit it that way... allows you to get a cleaner hit and not get the wheel studs.
once its broken loose you can take the nut completely off. |
I had a hell of a time helping a friend remove the axles on his Civic last weekend. We ended up using some 8" 3 jaw pullers attached to the hub. We hand tightened them then hooked up the electric impact gun to the end, they popped right out. No risk of mushrooming the end of the shaft that way.
You can get a set of 3 jaws for cheap at harbor freight. |
