Replaced timing belt/water pump (on the 02) now no start.
Hey all, I just replaced the timing belt and water pump on my 02 and the car wont start. It turns over normally wont wont fire. I tore it back down to recheck my timing which did infact look off.
For the record the intake gear only has one mark and it should be lined with the mark on the black plate, right? The exhaust gear is where I think I messed up and put the gear on wrong, so I spun the cam so the the #1 cylinder lobes are at 3 o'clock and then put the gear back on with the l lined up with the plate and the E at 12 o'clock. So with the exhaust side good and the intake side lined up correctly with those lobes at 9 o'clock and the gear mark lined up with the mark on the plate I went ahead and reassembled everything. I made sure that I put the crank sensor plate on right (with the dimple towards the read of the car). So with everything reassembled it still wont start. I checked the spark the only way I know how which is by using a screw driver inside of the wire and arching it off of the engine lift hooks and the spark seems to be very faint. How strong should it look? I also tripled check all connections and they're all connected. This has me really frustrated and kind of embarassed as this isnt my first timing belt. Thanks guys. __________________ Best Car Insurance | Auto Protection Today | FREE Trade-In Quote |
Verify you are getting spark on all four cylinders. Do a compression test.
|
I am getting spark on all 4 cylinders but it does seem to be very weak. For my own knowledge, why a compression test?

Are you sure you have the plug wires hooked up in the right order?
|
Matched them to my friends NB so yeah pretty sure. However it wouldn't hurt to be sure. Know of anywhere I where I could double check? I couldn't find a chilton book anywhere.
On a side note, my friend took apart the valve cover for me so I could paint it and I think this little washer was in it somewhere but he has no idea where. Look familiar to anyone? Word of advice to everyone, when doing this dont have people around who are gonna distract you and deffinately dont let them take anything apart if they arent gonna pay attention to what they are doing. __________________ Best Car Insurance | Auto Protection Today | FREE Trade-In Quote |
That almost looks like it's from the oil supply line on the back of the valve cover, there should be one on each side of the line.
......after looking again at a picture, it probably came from somewhere else. |
That is not a copper crush washer. Not sure what it is though.
|
Its deffinately not the oil supply washer. Anyone else have any ideas?

seems like the thick washer that goes on the bolt holding the camgear to the camshaft
|
Cant be, this washer is about the size of a dime.

Is you Crank sensor within specs? |
Did you confirm TDC? Dipstick in the #1 spark plug hole will tell you. Did you have to unplug anything electrical?

It runs! I have no idea what the problem was. When I got home the battery was dead so I gave it a charge and then after a few cranks the car started. Runs and idles perfect. :dunno:
