Okay the problem with my gas tank is that when i drive normally, like not taking corners like how miata are made to do, the gas doesn't leak out. However, if i take a corner too hard I would start smelling fumes of gas in the car. Like seriously bad fumes, I always think I would pass out if i cont sitting in the car. Has anyone ever had this problem with their miata? Being that it leaks only when i turn very hard, i assume the leak is on top of the fuel tank. So is there any way i can reach the top of the fuel tank of a 95 miata without have to take out the whole tank from the bottom which looks a whole lot like a jungle? I had estimates at auto body shops and the quotas they give is way out of my price range, one place wanted 1000$ to fix the problem because they complain about how hard it is to remove the gas tank. One more question before I'm done, if it does come to the point where I have to take the tank out in order to fix the problem, is it possible to do that with hand tools ? sorry for the long msg, any help would be greatly appreciated.

Go into trunk, pull the cover/protection panel at the main fuel feed lines. Check that all clamps are tight.

There are several ways to access the top of the gas tank.

1.) Through the trunk. Remove the metal plate on the left side in front of the gas filler pipe. You will be able to see where the filler tube enters the tank.

2.) Under the rear deck panel. Pop off the plastic caps that hold the rear carpet in place. There are two access panels in the top and front of the deck where you can get to the very top of the tank.

Good luck finding your leak.

Ahhh, thx for the help guys, greatly appreciated it. Tomorrow after i come home from school I will try to reach the top of the tank through the rear deck. I tried opening the metal plate in the trunk, and the clamps look fine so I don't think thats the problem, I'm pretty sure there is a hole somewhere on the top of the tank. Hopefully I will be able to patch it up, because if it comes down to removing the whole damn thing, I don't think I have the tools or money to remove the whole axle assembly >.< . I'll update my status asap, as for now, gotta get some sleep.

I'd be very suprised if the top of the tank has gotten a hole in it. It is completely protected by the shell of the car.

Seriously... take a screwdriver/wrench and tighten the filler clamps. Almost all the fuel smell problems I've seen people have since I bought my miata... have been behind that trunk panel and on the filler/breather line.

You can't "look" at the clamps and tell anything. My 91 smelled like gas every time I filled it up when I first bought it in 1996. I tightened the clamps in the trunk and don't squeeze the tank to fill it with the last drop and have never had a gas smell again.

As for a hole in the tank, how??

okay i got it fixed, turn out u guys were right, took the metal shielding behind the driver seat and tighten up everything. All i can smell now is rubber from the left rear wheel instead of gasoline. Btw the hole for the tank was an idea one of the auto shop guy told me. I don't know how he came up with that, but I started to believe him because I was clueless to the problem. I guess i just saved myself $1000 dollars eh. good stuff! With the gas leak fixed, now its time to buy intercooler pipings, manifold and downpipe to complete the turbo I had ready for this baby long time ago. thx guys!

Bringing back an old thread on gas leak. My gas tank is leaking (pinhole leak). I want to know if theres any quick fix or the only good way to fix a leaky gaz tank is to remplace it.
The leak is located in the joint in the front of tank.

Gotta weld it up. But make sure the tank is 100% full of gas when welding, you don't want it to shrink or it won't hold as much gas after you weld it.

Also this thread is 5 years old and completely unrelated to your problem.

<EDIT> Just read this kids other posts. I take back what I said below, I was hallucinating or something. What I meant to say was "Yes, just weld it." It's best to do so inside your garage, where the wind wont blow your shielding gas away. Much better welds that way. <END EDIT>

But, here we are, so...

If you have a pinhole, and it wasn't a puncture of some sort, then it's likely that the tank is rusting from the inside. If that's the case, write that sumbitch off; even if you use one of those epoxy kits to fix the hole you have, it's just a matter of time until another rusts through, and gas leaks are a Bad Thing. (Trust me on this one; I speak from experience..) You can inspect the inside of the tank through the fuel pump access hole in the top, under your interior rear deck. If it looks rusty in there, replace it.

Removing the tank is a pain in the ***, but nothing you couldn't pull off in a day. It's just not worth taking a chance on.

Tanks for the answer pinky. The tank was already out! It is a littel bit rusty on the outside but i saw nothing on the inside.I think i wont take chance and remplace it $$$. I try the white soap trick and it work but i dont trust to last very long.I know i had very bad post that's why i try to bring back an old tread.

Fast way to patch a gas tank is with a bar of soap. Just rub it where the pin hole is. Will hold up for days at a time. Re-apply as it begins to leak again. More permanent way is to buy a gas tank patch kit at chromezone/retardedauto/crapa/orlys/etc. And make sure as **** theres no gas or crap on the tank and follow the directions or it wont seal worth ****.
