Where is the oil filter thing in relation to the oil level?

The reason I ask is that I was changing my filter (old one exploded) and the car wasn't jacked up on stands, just flat and level. I come back today to find that my car had peed EVERY OUNCE of oil that was in it. It's all over my garage floor, the dipstick doesn't even have a drop.

Is this because I left it to sit without a filter while it was level, or should I be worried about something else?

Definitely be worried about something else...the filter fitting is pretty high compared to the crankcase.

I don't know how your old filter exploded, unless it was clogged and the bypass blocked, but even then oil comes from the pump straight to the filter, so is still lower than the fitting.

first off, how did the oil filter explode???

the oil filter sits well above the resting level of oil, so you have a big problem somewhere else. UNLESS someone sat and cranked the car over for twenty minutes without the filter on, which would fairly effectively hammer all the oil out o the car..

where's your oil return for your turbo?

check for a crack in the pan, since i can't think of any other way you'd lose so much oil that the dipstick is dry...

I just did a turbo install, but the drain or the area around doesn't have any oil on it whatsoever, leading me to believe that it's not leaking.

wait, so the car's been sitting, and looking around underneath it, or down into the engine bay from the top, there are NO hints as to where the oil may have been coming from?

Unless he left the drain plug out...

Should be easy to find where the oil is coming from, but its not coming from the filter area, thats for sure.

Ok, I just put 4 qts of oil back in. So far no leaks, no drips, nothing. I'm going to check the dipstick in half an hour, but this oil is fuggin' hard to see on a dipstick, it's semi-clear.

I think it might have leaked down last night when I was cranking it and it burst the leak, and I just didn't notice it because it seeped slowly down out from under the car. Since the subframe sort of acts as a big, shallow bucket for oil to collect it wouldn't surprise me.

What about where the drain line is tapped into the pan?

As far as the oil filter "exploding", I'd be concerned that you're pressurizing the crankcase. Double-check all your intake plumbing and vacuum connections.

That's what I meant, nothing around the drain has oil on it, only in.

Wastegate is unhooked, so I doubt it could be pressurizing the crank case.

Thanks for the help gays, I got it fixed. Turns out that last night when the filter blew the oil sat on the subframe and just slowly leaked down. Today, I replaced the filter, refilled with oil, let it run for a while, let it sit for an hour or so, and it was just fine. No spots or leakage anywhere.
