shifter compatibility
There's an old thread about this exact subject, but it lacked follow-up, so I'm going to start a new one.
I have a 1999 6-speed shifter. I want to put it into a 2001 5-speed base model. I understand they may be a bit different, but will it bolt on, and will it work. BTW-The 6-speed shifter has the same ball size as the 2001. |
It will bolt on. I have a friend who has his 2003 5 speed shifter on his 1999 6 speed
I'm going from 1999 6-speed to 2001 5-speed. Will it work correctly? Will the throw be longer or shorter?
It'll fit perfectly. I'm 99% sure. Only problem I think could be is the two pins on the trans and corresponding slots on the shifter. I can't remember if they both have two or one has one
They both have 2 pins. Do you think the throw will become longer or shorter?
I think that the leverage in both shifters is the same, so the throw would be unaffected.
There's another thread with a picture of different shifters. Mine seemed to have less space between the upper and lower ball. Would that affect anything including the throw?
The pivot is the same. You were probably looking at a second gen 6 speed?
I replaced my 1999 transmission 10AE with a 2002. My wife's 2001 needs a shifter. I'm trying to figure out if the shifter from my 1999 6-speed will work correctly.
Yes it should work
There a gazillion threads out there on this. The six speed does not shift nearly as smooth as the five. Miataroadster shifter is the answer, a bit pricey, but worth it in my opinion. Everything else works together ok.

As it turns out, they are different. 5-speed is in the left. So, would the 6-speed increase or decrease the travel? |

Surprised they are different. As-is, tt would increase the travel.
