Short throw shifter (cheap?)

As usual I tried to search but did not find anything related to the question.. (I suck at teh search engines on BBs..)

Has anyone ever purchased one of those cheap sub $100 shifters off ebay? If so, was it worth the money or huge waste? Seems so simple it'd be hard to go wrong, but I could be wrong...

Arkmage 07-26-2007 05:04 PM

I've been think'n about getting one... but they don't get my turbo installed so I've been holding off the temptation.

y8s 07-26-2007 05:41 PM

apparently they're nearly as good as the Mazdaspeed version... same basic design, but 250 bucks cheaper.

course I hated the mazdaspeed one so....

I have a fidanza short shifter. Don't recall it being that expensive.

I like it a lot. Everybody who's driven my car has commented on it.

Savington 07-26-2007 06:45 PM

I cut some more threads into my OEM shifter and then cut an inch off the top. I love it.

Braineack 07-26-2007 07:22 PM

there's a difference between a short throw, and short shaft.

elesjuan 07-26-2007 07:29 PM

Its all about the fulcrum. Shifters are nothing but levers.

boostinsteve 07-26-2007 07:59 PM

I have one off ebay, and so far been very pleased with it.

Bingo! You're one I've been looking for, someone that has one..

Which one do you have?

brgracer 07-26-2007 09:26 PM

I've heard good things about this one http://www.eastcoastmiata.com/shifter.html but have no personal experience. No affiliation to the seller...etc...

I purchased this one a little over a year ago. Make sure that you have new Teflon bushings (2) for your shifter.

If it were me, I'd get this one on the cheap. I has all you need!

EDIT: I thought I'd add this in because of NEO's post below mine

you can pick up the fidanza one on there for $70. thats a good price for a good brand name imo. The main thing I worry about with the super cheap ones is that the metal might be porous and the shifter break on you during a hard shift.

samnavy 07-26-2007 10:19 PM

Before you buy a short-throw, get yourself a Voodoo knob and see if that gives you the feel/action you're looking for.

TurboTim 07-26-2007 10:40 PM

I've used one of those ebay jobbies for the past few years with great results. Fulcrum is moved up kinda deal. My old roommate and I bought a dozen to get a better price (probably compariable to what they are now on ebay) and he or I may have an extra one lying around somewhere if you're interested.

curly 07-27-2007 12:42 PM

got one for about $30 on ebay, works great, although the bushing on the end of the shifter was crap, but it was like $4 at the dealership for a new one, cause I broke the original one when I tried to get it off the oem shifter shaft.

cjernigan 07-27-2007 10:04 PM

Old roommate had one. It worked great. Replace you bushing on the end if it is bad though, that makes a big difference in feel. His was cracked and felt like shit, though the shifter itself appears to be good quality and definitely has a shorter throw. Plus it takes the lower shift boot out of the equation because of the way it bolts on.

boostinsteve 07-27-2007 10:14 PM

The second ebay link in Lola's post is the one that I am using. It use to be cheaper, but oh well. The one that I got was $15.00, and $12.00 for shipping. I also trimmed it down some so that the shifter knob sits lower, and got one of those 99 cent shift knobs. Has worked really well so far, and like everyone else says, the bushings that they supply are shit, so plan on getting new bushings.

So I bought the 60$ shipped fidanza from ebay and it came today. No installation instructions so I had to mess with it for a few until finally figured it out. The shift is really short, but its a little more sloppy than I want when in gear. Can live with it, but just wanted to mention.

Uhm, Also I don't think this is an authentic product.. Did some research that claimed fidanza shifters are aluminum... this one is clearly machined steel.

Ben 08-02-2007 09:08 PM

My fidanza is aluminum, was more than $60 (maybe double that, idk anymore), and isn't sloppy in any regard. Either they cheapend them, or you got a knock off.
