Since I have some downtime while my injectors are being cleaned..

..I decided to do some spring cleaning and also take out the sound deadening from under the carpet (which turns out to be pretty light :hs: ). Looks so clean now its almost a shame to cover it back up with carpet again. This pic was at the half way point to give you an idea of before / after.

Weigh it and let us know if it was worth the effort.

Its going to be sitting there for a week or two anyways so I didn't mind the effort, but I knew ahead of time that it wouldn't be worth the effort just to take the sound deadening out. I mainly wanted to pull the carpet to clean it, the inside has smelled pretty funky for a while so I am going to give everything a good cleaning. I would guess it is all under 5lbs.

:edit: lightweightmiata.com has it at 4lbs.

The carpet can get funky if it was ever wet and not allowed to dry.

what did you use to get it out?

XxGoKoUxX 05-02-2008 02:00 AM

dry ice most likely

I haven't removed any of the tar spots (tiny squares in the pic, and the big mat in the trunk), but I will be removing them as soon as I can find dry ice locally. The whole underside of the carpet has material under it that is pretty much insulation made from cloth fibers or something, about 1/2" thick. To clean what was left of that stuff, I used some carpet cleaner I grabbed off the shelf at work, it is an off brand name but holy shit does it work. It took stains off my paint that I haven't been able to get out before. I just sprayed it on the floor and scrubbed at it with some rags. I think its called Technicians Choice Carpet Stain Remover.

Or a heat gun

Marc D 05-02-2008 02:20 AM

yea, dry ice is the best method. i think they sell some at party stores around here at least.

XxGoKoUxX 05-02-2008 02:24 AM

publix... if you guys have one locally, usually stocks dry ice....

i'm pretty sure a heat gun will leave sticky residue

mike_671 05-02-2008 03:07 AM

You should spray it with a coat or two of rust converter just because you can. When i had my carpet out thats what i did.

ApexOnYou 05-02-2008 01:25 PM

There aren't any party stores around here, never heard of Publix either. I think my best bet is to try asking at a deli or market for a brick. I think I may lay some insulation under the dash on the drivers and passenger side floor / trans tunnel to keep my feet cool while the carpet is out, they get really hot with my open down pipe, I usually have to have vent air blasting on my feet. I am going to see if I can find some stick on insulation at Home Depot after work, like the silver/aluminum stuff.
