Skyactiv tuning info
Interesting thread on m.net
Miata ND/Skyactiv Tuning Information thread - MX-5 Miata Forum There's bit on FI |

Super interesting, thanks for sharing.

Totally stock engine, tune only, gain 20whp? That sounds fantastic.

|
Kinda begs the question why Mazda left so much on the table.
Could it really be just emissions? |

I think it's emissions, and... Mazda. Who the hell knows what they're doing engine-wise.

|

I blame the bean counters.

|
Interesting indeed.
I'm gonna wanna see more than 1 person gain 20whp because that's quite a lot for a naturally aspirated car that supposedly doesn't gain anything from timing. Just sayin. *edit: but then again I'm not familiar with this new engine at all so who knows. |
Same discussion but further along, no trolling please it's actually a legit South Cali race forum.
ND on the dyno |
Very nice to hear, this is good news for folks who want a little more powah without running boost. I'm interested again!

ND on the dyno It's promising, but some of the appeal of the Miata is it's wet fart of a motor. The BP isn't some bespoke, brilliant design; it's as dumb as it gets. Some MZR variants are exciting, but nothing particularly exciting or groundbreaking. The Skyactiv motor following the same exact trajectory is all of a sudden blasphemy and Mazda's lost sight of the target? Eh. I'm 100% weary of tuning solutions that follow the "you can't touch it, but trust us" model. I know people have had various degrees of success with Cobbs and whatnot; however, it definitely seems like a cheap way to produce an expensive problem. |
I seem to remember concerns a few years back that tuning software could violate the DMCA. I think the crux of it was that it was illegal to sell software capable of cracking certain encryption schemes, but it wasn't necessarily illegal to use that software. No idea if it's related or not these days.
A lot of people don't want to deal with the hassle of tuning or are intimidated/incapable of the process (especially on in warranty, new, expensive vehicles). Also, it sounds like the Orange Virus guy intends to offer a user interface, but hasn't yet. |

Now as far as making an extra 20hp with just a tune on this modern day engine with modern day ECU, the same argument that applied to older engines and archaic ECUs: they had to make it work worldwide (i.e., CA fuel vs TX fuel), they had to make it emissions friendly, and they had to make it last the warranty period. You are always going to make more power getting rid of these compromises. But I agree, 20hp with just a tune is extraordinary on a 150hp engine. |
20 horsepower shmorsepower.
I want TRRRUUUBBBOOOO!!!! |
