slight axial and radial play, slight ticking at idle
should i be worried? The CHRA is tight, no oil or signs of contact on the compressor wheel. This only maybe a few ticks per minute in terms of noise. When you give it any gas, the tick does not occur. I had a serious oil pressure problem today with my 2nd of 3 oil cooler installs.

Sounds more like an exhaust leak to be honest. I have a leak between the mani and head that sounds almost like a ticking lifter at idle but goes away with some throttle input.
Axial play is no good, radial play is almost always there as long as it doesn't contact anything though you're fine. My turbo and another sitting on the shelf have no axial play whatsoever. By axial you're meaning a back and forth play in the shaft, right? |
yes, play on the axis (in out), and play on the radius. I think it has as much play as new, but can't remember. I textededed Savingaids and he told me to drive it at the track this weekend. Skipping the weekend won't save it if its bad.

oh by all means take it to the track.

Now my 1.6 oil pressure gauge is shaking. Thoughts?

Take it out and try to break it. Have fun and get some good video.

Axial means that if you pull or push on the comp wheel, it moves in/out. Radial is if you try to move it from side to side. So if the comp wheel will move toward the bump, thats axial. If it will move toward the head, thats radial.
Axial sucks, radial is normal to a degree. The thing is, its also dependent on other things. Idle your car for a few moments and check the play. Its should be very little. If its sat there a few minutes without oil pressure, its often a bit more noticeable. I doubt you have a problem. |
Take it to the track or I'll lock you in it and show your girlfriend what she's been missing.
|
My oil pressure gauge is whacked out bad. The turbo is fine, I needed something extra to stress about. It worked.
|
Did you go up today
|
I'm in Cleveland, ok now. If you're coming bring a white male some sunscreen please.
|
my opg bobs up and down like an ugly girl. the VVT is responsible.
|
Did you flip the lines or did your girlfriend do it for you while you were curled up in the fetal position in the corner of the garage?
|
Flipped the lines, same problem. Yes, gf did it while I cried in my pillow.

Turbo feels fine, did fine at the track, but there's a weird little tinny-ticking noise at idle.
|
Just to close up this thread from years ago, it was the heat sheild between the turbine wheel and chra. The CHRA was slightly loose, but held tight by the inco wire.
