Personally, I haven't seen a valve cover cut by FM that has looked decent IMO. Have you thought about a different valve cover? A buddy of mine swapped his at the gap for one off a.. I want to say Protege?.. that didn't have a cam cover. Had to get a coil pack bracket though, since that valve cover wasn't designed to mount our coil pack. It looked great though!

Exposed cam covers only look good if you have nice adjustable cam sprockets.

id be worried about a wire or hose getting caught and skipping the timing gear, causing a water leak leading to overheating, or something else lol

When you turn the valve cover over you can see where the gasket is. just cut off what you want without going over that line.

Here's how I cut mine. I decided to remove the entire flange that covers/protects the belt:

I spend too much time leaning on the motor to leave anything like that moving and exposed. Nice way to wipe out a timing light, also.

For anybody running with the 1.8, I found that if you take the cam cover from an Escort GT with the 1.8 (early 90's)... they have one where the gears would be exposed.

Unfortunately, it's got a big huge ford logo on it.... <G>

I thought about using it, but without having the adjustable cam gears, it's not worth it to me. I would rather keep them covered, and protected....
