Does anyone out there know if the tailshaft of a 6 speed manual transmission has an embedded magnet, notch, or other means to activate a speed sensor? Can I take out the dummy plug and put in a working sensor? I will not be using ABS or DCS, and do not have any speed sensors on any wheels. Would be real nice if transmission was universal for other applications and would allow me to just pop in a sender instead of fabbing up something elsewheres.

It may have, as the factory diagrams do show that there is a version that has a sensor on the gearbox (presumably for markets that didn't have ABS as standard?). Why are you deleting the ABS?

From what I can see in the parts diagrams, the only NC transmissions with a speed sensor were early NC1 cars without ABS. The 5sp and 6sp outer case diagrams both show a cover plate for models with ABS and a speed sensor for non-ABS.

For the 5sp, the internal parts diagram shows a "sensor rotor" that's only listed for non-ABS cars, so you can't just grab any 5 speed from the junkyard and add the external sensor. Needs to be a unicorn non-ABS car to have the internal tone ring.

The 6sp internal parts diagram is less clear. There's a synchro ring that's listed for models with ABS, but I don't see an alternate part number for that synchro ring for non-ABS models. Nothing at all about a "sensor rotor" on the 6sp parts list.

I have a 2006 and a 2009 6sp in the garage right now. The 2006 has a drilled port with a cover plate for a speed sensor, but I just pulled the cover plate off and there's no sensor rotor underneath. The 2009 has the same port location in the casting but it's undrilled. So, it's possible that there's a non-ABS 2006 6sp with a sensor rotor on the shaft, but that would be even more unicorn than finding a non-ABS NC in the first place.

So I'm basically kinda SOL then on that it sounds like

Possible to find the ring from a 5 speed and add it to a standard ABS transmssion? Since they seem to just have a dumby plug on the transmission?

Actually I just checked again and spun the input shaft this time. There's a hole drilled in the shaft that's centered on the sensor hole. I bet it would work.

This transmission is definitely from an ABS car.

That's definitely an option but would require major transmission surgery.

I don't mind some surgery tbh, you should see what I'm already having to go through just to get the suspension from the nc to work in the midget, kinda hesitant to run an nc1 6 speed, heard they are a bit weaker when you really dog on them but idk how true that is, also they seem to be much harder to find in my area, all I've found is a 5 speed from a 2007

Dunno. The later 6 speeds had the casting spots for the sensor, they just didn't drill the holes. You could drill it yourself, but who knows if the shaft is spot drilled like the 2006.

I haven't been racing NCs for that long, but so far my opinion is that the 5sp is the more reliable box if you aren't making serious turbo power. All of the 190-210whp NC guys that I race with started with 6 speeds (including upgraded Walter boxes) and had enough problems that they switched back to junkyard 5 speeds, which have been trouble-free so far.

Also is there anything other then the ring that's needed to put it in or different from the abs versions, spacers snap rings or anything of the sort

I can't find any diagrams that are detailed enough for that. I have alldata for my NC but it only has rebuild procedures for the 6sp for some reason. Nothing for 5sp.

Apologies, I changed emails addresses and lost track of this thread. I ended up buying an electronic speedometer and sensor from Speedhut, making a notched plate to bolt between driveshaft and differential, and mounting sensor on diff. Disassembled gauge cluster, took needle pointer off speedo, mounted gauge in front. Will send a pic if you want, doesn't look bad, although it sounds like it would.
