half shaft coming out?

unbolt the half shaft. Then you may have to knock out a stud or two to move it out of the way. Then you can pull ot the stub shaft. There should be a circlip on the very end of it that fits into a groove inside the differential (this is what holds it in). Possible it got damages and mangled and why you cant refit it.

good advice. thank you. the idea of knocking the studs out was exactly what i needed. shouldn't be a problem with those out.
as for the ring, the shaft is very hard to get back in at this point. i imagine that the ring is still on there and it'll take a good solid hit straight on with the shaft unbolted to get it to slide in. i'll take it out and take a look though. thanks all.
btw, sarcasm about the pics? my droid just re-sizes them automatically when it sends them usually lol.
