unbolt the half shaft. Then you may have to knock out a stud or two to move it out of the way. Then you can pull ot the stub shaft. There should be a circlip on the very end of it that fits into a groove inside the differential (this is what holds it in). Possible it got damages and mangled and why you cant refit it.

OMG...someone knoes how to take a proper close-up picture/use the preview function of their camera before posting a picture that's as easy to view as a billboard in a blizzard. Thank you.

Or just remove the outer upper control arm bolt to move the shaft out of the way. My clip was too closed up to snap in place and hold the shaft in. You probably have the same issue, or the clip is missing. If missing you might want to check and make sure it's not inside somewhere.

good advice. thank you. the idea of knocking the studs out was exactly what i needed. shouldn't be a problem with those out.

as for the ring, the shaft is very hard to get back in at this point. i imagine that the ring is still on there and it'll take a good solid hit straight on with the shaft unbolted to get it to slide in. i'll take it out and take a look though. thanks all.

btw, sarcasm about the pics? my droid just re-sizes them automatically when it sends them usually lol.

No, it was a compliment. Many users don't know what "focus" means.

thanks all. finally got it this morning. the idea about knocking the studs out got it done in a pretty timely fashion. the clip seemed to be in fine shape, so one good whack with a mallet on a piece of wood and it finally clipped right in.
