Sport bike mirrors

I am re-wiring my car and taking all of the non-essentials out - such as the power mirrors, pretty much putting the car on a major diet. I am not really a fan of the stock Miata mirrors and don't want to put stock manual mirrors on, but don't want to spend $300 on a set of aftermarket mirrors that the dr1ft boys drool over. My friend suggested looking into a set of sport bike mirrors, which I think am I going to try. They are practically the same size mirror as the after market option, but can easily be found for $50 or less. Has anyone tried this? I am just trying to find a set that would have the right angles on the joints, making an adapter should be cake.

Something along the lines of this, obviously using a different mount piece:

It all depends on the shape, size, and mounting location as to if I like them. Ive seen some look ok, and others look like total ass.

ApexOnYou 01-19-2009 02:24 AM

But you have seen people use them on a Miata?

zoomin 01-19-2009 02:35 AM

I have driven a Miata with the smaller carbon fiber mirrors and they really suck on visibility!!

Quite a few around M dot net. To me overall they all look ricey. Dont go with the look and lines of the car at all.

but replacing will remove some drag

I say just make a block off plate for the passenger side mirror, and run only the driver side. Isn't that the only one you 'need'

The mirrors on the 2001+ Triumph Daytona 955i are incredibly vibration free and easily adjustable. Also much sleeker looking than the above pic, and offer pretty good view as far as bike mirrors go.

This may or may not be helpful, but I'm considering trying it if I can find some cheap. Either way, with bike mirrors, it would certainly pay to talk to owners of said bike as many bike mirrors are nearly worthless (especially with a little motor buzzing at insane rpms underneath them).

I agree for driving on the street. Visibility is hindered.
I use a panaramic rear view mounted to existing rear view for adjustability. Can see completely across the rear of the car and then some. Use the mirrors for another 10 ft. either direction of placement.
I mainly use the rear view, and the sides for placement when being overtaken. (Or in your case, when overtaking.....)

I'm going to do a set of Formula car mirrors on my car eventually. Concave, not CF, 4x2.5", for $90. I think I found them on Pegasus' site.

Cpt_Slow 01-19-2009 01:40 PM

I bought my Miata with a set of CF mirrors that look like they were meant for a bike. Visibility sucks, but I like the look more than the bubbly stock mirrors.

Mine look like these http://flyncycle-images.com/ca/mirro.../mruf1cbns.jpg

Mine have an aluminum shaft (that's what she said) and are real CF, but they mount the same way. PO just drilled a hole where he wanted them and put a Miata badge over the factory mounting location.

Nice find. They are 30min north of me, don't know why I didn't look on their site. I think I will try those, they seem big enough for street use but light. I think those are the exact mirrors that 949 sells for $250 (CF non concave).

Convex you mean? Im sorry, I just thing all aftermarket mirros Ive seen look like ass. Those nylon ones on Pegasus i could almost swing if they were oval or round. Just think square looks weird on a cruvy car like the Miata. To each his own.

And Gospeed, if we are talking about the same mirrors, wouldnt those be looking back into the car? They mount on the front of the bike kind of. Youd have to come up with omething creative to mount them.

ApexOnYou 01-20-2009 12:27 PM

Yeah I agree they don't look spectacular, but if I can shave a pound here and there it adds up. Adding a 100lb cage calls for some weight reduction lol.

Go ahead and drop the coin... just kidding... the CF must have a gold inlay. These actually look like they 'may' bolt in the same fashion as the stock mirrors do.

FYI, I just tried mounting some Suzuki aftermarket $20 bike mirrors off Egay. Had to cut the post in half, grind and mount. Might have looked 'ok' but the mirror surface itself seemed warped at the edges which caused distortiom. I promptly ripped them off and threw them away. Back to looking.

OMG... now just realized how old this post is. Flog me with an dip stick I'm an ass.... hey, at least I searched.

Not exactly sport bike mirrors but,
I bought these from Mooneys they were $19.95 and are 4” diameter S800 style.

Product Details: GT0024 on Mooneyes Online Store

Made my own mounts for them. They are slightly convex and I can see real well out of them, much lower drag than stock. My car domain shows how I made the mounts. It is not a task for the fabrication challenged however.

I have seen Japanese aftermarket mirrors that look very close to what I made might even be the same exact mirror but the price was in the $300 range.

Got those mirrors on my car, flat not convex though. They work pretty good, visibility is not that great but I've got a broadway rearview mirror so that makes up for a lot of what I loose from the sideviews.

I had a to make a baseplate for them to mount to the stock doors but it was pretty easy.
