What bearing did they use? I seem to remember they used Honda Bearings for the Rod Bearings but I am not 100% sure.

rharris19 01-21-2010 11:57 AM

That sounds correct, but they are figuring that all out at the shop. I know when I was looking at the pistons, the model number was for a civic.

Thats sucks Robert, at least you get to run around with the mod guys right? Can't wait to be a the track...1 more week!

Spinning a bearing without messing up a rod journal is like a miracle. Have you played the lottery yet?

Well I talked to the shop again this morning. He is saying that the motor was built fine, but the bearings were too soft in his opinion and looked like OEM substitute bearings. I asked about oil temps and he said what he was looking at was typical of too soft of bearings combined with pretty high oil temps. I told him I saw 270 when at the track and he replied that it was probably in the low 300's based on wear. There are no scorings anywhere on the crank or rods, so the bearing was just worn.

He is going to replace all bearings, rods, main, and thrust with some better bearings. This should take about a week to get everything in and get it finished.

Looks like I will be putting an NA 1.8L in my car for the MSR-H race next weekend. Worse things could happen.

What's the parts/labor $ on that?

rharris19 01-21-2010 02:14 PM

~$550 with the new rings, and all bearings. I brought it to him as an assembled short block minus the pan and will get it back that way.

Yes, Yes I have. That's a dark side of me that I thought would never come up again. Thanks

Yeah I thought it was the best the situation could be. The machine shop told me it was very rare that they just have to replace bearings.

Faeflora 01-21-2010 02:25 PM

Hmm I have OEM bearings in my built motor. Is that bad ? :(

rharris19 01-21-2010 02:27 PM

Honestly, I have no idea. I think for street use it is fine, but for a dedicated track car that sees higher oil temps, he said they were too soft.

I used ACL Race bearings with ~.003 of clearance in my last motor. They looked fine when they came out. Redline 15w50.

Can you run a V8 in that series? Do you just get more "points" assessed or is it not allowed? Is anyone running a v8 yet?

It's good to hear the damage was minimal. That's pretty cheap overall. Best of luck with the fix.

Yes I can run a V8 and I will stay in Unlimited. The points are about the same as where I am now with the turbo. ZX-tex is running a LS1 in his if he comes to any of the races. Other than that, I don't know of anyone specifically.

I was excited that there was this little of damage as well. He could have done it back to where it was with oem bearings and not replaced the rings for only $300, but it was worth it, even if I sell ti to get the LS1.

Anyone want V-band? :giggle:

I'm going to stop logging in here.

Your setup would be great for a street car.

rharris19 01-21-2010 07:16 PM

This setup would be a dream on the street, but on the track I may upgrade to the .86. It felt very linear on the track and I really didn't need more than 275hp, so I'm going with a cammed LS1.

M-Tuned 01-21-2010 07:37 PM

This motor has a re-wroked OEM crank in it right? I believe they were offset ground or something.. Right???

rharris19 01-21-2010 07:54 PM

I am trying to figure that all out right now so people can make a more budget friendly 2.0L. I should have part numbers soon.

99mx5 01-21-2010 08:04 PM

Sorry to hear about your engine failure so close to an event and I'm glad to hear that the damage wasn't worse. Better now than later, otherwise the damage would be much worse.

jacob300zx 01-21-2010 11:17 PM

Robert I would be very interested in the part numbers for a stroker na build.

rharris19 01-21-2010 11:21 PM

I thought people might. Didn't even think of a stroker NA, but the thought intrigues me.

Stroking my nana isn't too intriguing anymore.
