Default SR20 swap kits

http://clubroadster.net/vb_forum/showthread.php?t=36320

Saw this while I was about to puke on my keyboard because of the stupidness of CR. But this held it back a little bit.

What are your thoughts? I would never do this swap, on the basis that you could do a V8 swap for around the same price if you DIY'd some stuff. I guess it all depends on how X-TREME you want to get. I bet the SR20 weighs less than the Miata block.

I can't make my mind up on weather or not it's a good idea. Thoughts?

Doesn't look too bad but I can't judge until I see it in person or read a review from someone who is very badass on track. The swap itself definitely makes sense if you get an 8.8 Ford rear end along with it. Driveshaft can be made for pretty cheap locally (almost everywhere you can get it for around or under $350).

Aftermarket for SR20 is huge and motors are really easy to find and don't really cost all that much. If you shop around, you can get the whole swap done for under $6k. Average LS-1 swap comes down to about $10-12k so that leaves you with about $4-6k to build the motor.

I think it is cheaper to build a BP.

I debated putting my sr20 in my miata after I got out of the 240 world. It is a great motor..and in recent years has gotten dirt cheap.

I still wouldn't pay those prices, but the brackets do look perty.

The price needs a little work then it would be a more appealing option.

+1 on high price. If this was like 2k or even 1.5k (Though that would be a wet dream ), then this swap would be worth every penny, but they're basically charging 2x the price of the drivetrain just for the brackets and ****. Not much competition to drive it down though.

Id say stick with the BP motor and build it with the money you save from doing the swap.... for the price of the swap you could easily get the 200 hp the SR20's going to give you.... and id probably last longer than the tiger japan or junkyard SR20 your going to put in it..
Just my 2 cents,
Mike

Sorry, but a BP or a V8 are the only thing worth swapping in to your 90-93 miata.

Agreed, I have a cousin that owns a machine shop wonder if I got him a kit how much to remake them, they would sell good at a fair price.

if the price was a bit lower i would go for it! i would rather do this than spend the money on stroker parts and then spend even more money for a shop to build the engine!

+1

I agree the kit cost it to much, but at one time we were all saying that about the LSx kits. They have come down, and it is nice that they are offering an oil pan with the kits.

But in the end, it not so much the peak power, it about the power under the curve and the added .2L(yea I know not much). In the end it just gives people another option for those that don't want to build a B6 or BP.

If they drop the kit down to say $800 for the pan, $150 for the motor mount and $100 for the transmission. So closer to 1K or even 1.5K it would be a great deal.

hell, this just wont swap a SR20 it will also do the KA24 so thats 2 differnt options for the kit. you just need to address the oilpan, from a bit of light reading its possible to use the SR20 pan on the KA. not pnp thought.

if i had the time, money and resorces i would buy one of this kits to replicate it and change a few things so i wont get sued for copy rights! lol

I think. SR/KA/CA/RB20 basically use existing parts. The bigger RBs take some custom work (oil pan, motor mounts, and what not).

But **** it. I would never do an SR because they are played out. I always wanted a CA. If I had the skills my Miata would have one. One day I will have the skills and a Datsun Roadster to benefits from them!

What in the ****?

I see $500 worth of hardware...and I'm not even kidding. Sure, mark it up a little for the development, and of course margin...but come on.

To boot, for the price, there are more attractive options. AND you still have to make the **** run.

Now if they had a PnP kit for $2500 where you just find the drivetrain, bolt it up, and plug it in and run, I'd be all about that. I don't think anyone has ANY PnP swap in that neighborhood.

Custom oilpans up the price. I still think its way overpriced and not worth doing. Heck, it doesn't even include a driveshaft (unless I'm remembering wrong).

or this:

and I still think the rotaries are cool, even though the idea is played out. Regardless of noob posts, when you back up from the internet a bit, and think: rotary + miata....you like what's behind the = sign.

BP if you want to go fast, V8 if you want to hard park.
