Starting 91 Miata After Sitting for 4 years

Do you guys have any tips on starting? Bone stock. I was thinking:

1) Drain gas and replace
2) Change oil
3) Flush and change coolant
4) Remove spark plugs and handcrank (drip some oil into each cylinder?)
5) Trickle charge battery or replace

Anything else you'd recommend? Is fuel filter necessary?

Edit: I just bought a fuel filter.

Pull the intake filter and check the box for mice. Squirt an ounce of oil in each cylinder before cranking.

Drain gas and look for rust. Refill with 93 and seafoam. Auto trans fluid down the holes. Fresh plugs. Fresh battery hooked to jumper cables. Check the oil level and anti freeze. Dont replace either yet just add to full mark. Break loose the pads from the rotors.

All of the above, plus you should unplug the CAS and crank until it builds oil pressure before lighting it off. I would change the oil first.

It might be overkill, but following Savington's suggestion, it wouldn't hurt things to pop the cam cover off and drizzle some assembly lube on the cam lobes. It has been four years.

Why was it parked?

So brave..

Parked bc it overheated from a leaky oem radiator, but replaced it w/ a Godspeed. I then moved to San Francisco for 4 years for school...and it sat all by its lonesome self.

1)WOT
2)turn key

like a Bawsss....

Curly is right that to prevent fueling when turning over to prime (build oil pressure) hold WOT. Easiest way to accomplish that.

curly 02-09-2014 01:24 PM

What? No. Not my point. Does it really do that? Lame.

revised:

1)75% WOT
2)turn key

DNMakinson 02-09-2014 02:21 PM

Yes it does that. On carbs, when an engine flooded, you fixed it by holding WOT. To compliment that, EFI is set up the same. Once we thought our Expy was broken but turned out my wife was thinking she was pressing the brake, but it was the gas pedal.

MS3 has same (adjustable) feature.

Now I understand your cryptic answer. Open throttle to start it rather than rely on idle valve.
