Steering Wheel and Hub for dual purpose car

Hi All,

I have a 97 with BBFW roll bar and door bars with a Cobra Suzuka Pro-fit seat. Car is dual purpose for track and joy riding, not DD.

Looking for suggestions on hubs and steering wheels. I'd like the wheel about 1" closer to me for better leg space during pedal dancing. Right now I am looking at a Nardi Deep Corn 330 leather and Works Bell Standard hub.

Do I need a quick release? The door bars are definitely going to make ingress/egress more difficult.

The cleanest setup I've found is Works Bell short hub, Works bell rapid fix II QR, and the Nardi. Only issue is it's a $900 setup.

I'd like to accomplish my goal for less than $500.00. Suggestions?

You need a quick release. Getting in and out of a race seat without one is a huge pain in the ass, especially with the top up. It's unsafe to have a car on the track that you can't get out of easily.

I used the Daikei Boss hub and an NRG quick release. The Nardi Deep Corn was too deep with that setup, and put the wheel too close to me. I switched to a flatter Momo wheel, I think it's a Tuner.

It's not very safe to go on track in a car that has the stock airbag system removed unless you're planning to use a 5 or 6 point harness and HANS device. It's not really that safe on the street either, but you will have to decide which compromises you can live with.

I use a Momo crushable adapter and NRG standard quick-release and a "flat" wheel. Feels great to me, but its all about personal comfort.

I use an NRG slim hub and QR on a Momo Competition 350mm. Whole setup can be done for under $500, and it's my favorite wheel to date from a feel perspective.

Sounds like NRG QR are the standard. Any slop in steering with these installed?

I know the stock miata wheel is 355mm, can anyone speak to 350 vs 330, etc? Seems like a 350 would be big considering the stock is 355.

Still have PS here, as of now planning to keep it but I know this has been covered extensively in other threads.

If you stick to the standard QR. Their slim QR's are questionable at times. I've had a standard one for 10+ years with no issue.

I've got the NRG hub adapter and standard QR with a 350mm Momo wheel with 20mm dish, i find it's a good size and sits about an inch closer to me then the stock wheel. No play or issues with the QR, hub adapter works well if you remove the clock spring and make a contact for the horn (Google will serve you well for this)

I agree, the NRG standard quick release is high quality- no slop or play at all. My Momo wheel is 350mm, I don't have power steering and it feels perfect. Plenty of leverage, but up away from my knees. I wouldn't go with a 330 personally.

Also ran NRG short hub and regular QR on several cars. Works well, no problems for the most part. I prefer smaller wheels though - 330mm or smaller. A D-cut may be nice too. Just be warned that hub+QR+ dished wheel may put it too close to you. If you are a normal height human, then a flat wheel may be a better option.

Thanks all! Right now I'm looking at a Nardi Competition 330 with NRG gen 2.5 QR and NRG short hub.

Are you guys running the short NRG hub or is there a standard one I'm not seeing?

I did a Momo 330mm flat wheel, an NRG Gen 2 QR and the Momo hub adapter. It puts the wheel a tiny bit closer than stock if I remember correctly.

NRG Short hub here, they don't make a "standard" one AFIK

Went with the Nardi Competition 330 with NRG gen 2.5 QR and NRG short hub. I'll follow up with install pics, measurements and a review of 1st impressions once installed.
