T1r, Bfg, Spt

Just wondering if any people on this forum have experience with these tires(T1R, BFG, SPT). I got 3k from my azenis and can't afford to do that again. I have heard very mixed reactions with the toyos as some people said they have a shit sidewall that is really unresponsive, while other people say they are amazing.

And please don't go "OMFG YOU GO TOOO FASSTT!1!" I have already been called an idiot on m.net:eek: and that was enough. I understand that I was pushing a bit hard for the street and am going to adjust my driving style accordingly as I already took one car off of a cliff totaling it (although my front shocks were in for repair and I had 180 spring rates up front and 330 in the rear).

Any other suggestions for tires that will still have some kind of grip (not expected to be like the azenis) but wear a bit slower will be appreciated.

neogenesis2004 10-15-2007 11:53 PM

I feel you on the azenis. My fronts are totally warn and I have tire rubber splatter all over the bottom of my fenders. The rears are fine though. I really want to get some rs2s but it seems like they are sold out everywhere in every size.

paul 10-15-2007 11:59 PM

i run T1R's on my gutted turbo car and love them but i prefer a softer sidewall with the car being so light. I used to run Azenis and it was really hard to put the power down and I gave up some grip cuz the tires seemed to skip across bumps. the T1R's are great in the rain and deal with standing water very well.

on my normal weight Miata I run Advan A043's and love them but they are a lil pricey. great in the wet too.

949racing.com has a few sets of 245/45r15 RS2s, get them.
They had like 8 left a couple days ago.

neogenesis2004 10-16-2007 12:14 AM

i just need 205s man.

Braineack 10-16-2007 08:51 AM

my Falkens lasted 5 years. Granted they probably have under 5k on them.

I hears great things about the RS2s

magnamx-5 10-16-2007 09:13 AM

MY BFG gforce sports are on track to last 40 or so K miles give or take a few K for gratiutous burnouts. But I feel after i year the rubber seems to get a little harder, than it was when new. That being said i will either go with a RS2 a DR or a set of the Gforcesports agian next year, esp if i buy some wider rims for the back. Sidewalls are great steering is great and overall grip is great esp for a 225-50 r15

Braineack 10-16-2007 09:24 AM

I would have gone with rs2s this time, however i got a free set of 615s, so my choice was easy.

fourwhls 10-16-2007 09:29 AM

Dependent on your budget, the two hot street tires these days are the Bridgestone Potenza RE-01R and the Yokohama Advan AD07. They are pretty much dominating the street tire autocross classes.

BUT...They are going to wear just as fast as Azenis.

It sucks with tires, but you can't have your cake and eat it too. You either get awesome grip or awesome treadwear. You can't have both.

A good compromise to look at would be the Kumho MX or the Kumho ASX. The MX will have better grip and stiffer sidewall, but will wear faster. The ASX has a softer sidewall and less grip but will last much longer. Another bonus is the ASX is cheap.

I run ASXs on my BMW for daily use. They seem to be working really well.

speedf50 10-16-2007 07:16 PM

Thanks for the info. I'd guess that the G-force sport would be a bit less grippy than the T1-R. Anyone have the g-force t/a kdw? And would the softer T1-R sidewall make it a better tire for rough canyon driving? I was thinking about maybe running the 215/45/15 of the T1-R for a bit of grip over rough surfaces, any thoughts? I have a 15x7 wheel.

And anyone run the SPT? I'd like to go with the MX or RS2, but among other things (RS2 out of stock) I think I'd just end up eating those up too quickly. I had MX on the car when I first got the wheels and went through them in a little over 5k. Maybe if I slow down a bit I may be able to get some more miles out of those, but I'd really like to get something that will hopefully last over 10k, and I'm willing to sacrifice some grip to get there.

unfortunately. I don't like them that much, they don't have that much grip, but they will last you the 10k you're wanting.

mtncrvr 10-16-2007 08:52 PM

215/45/15 T1R - special size and has reinforced side walls very responsive - I ran T1s then T1r now on my first set of azenis.. The T1rs are great tires I've just been wanting to try out the azenis. I've ran ~4 sets of T1S now and loved them, T1R is basically the same tire but better in wet.

socal pat 10-16-2007 08:54 PM

If you went through the MX's in 5k then even the T1r won't last you too long. Either get used to spending money on tires or get some 100k mile bricks on there. Well, you could drive less agressively, but what fun would that be?

miatamania 10-16-2007 09:02 PM

I loved my RS2s on my stock wheels, and I wore out y8s azenis on the c8s...both were great tires...

Gloko 10-16-2007 10:08 PM

SpeedF50 I hear what your saying.....from my personal experiance my tires (regardless of rating) never last more then 4k till treadbar was eating....and I'd still milk them till like 6-7k where they are pretty much slicks and chording:ugh2:...(dumb I know). but these days I drive canyons less so my last set's of azenies are lasting a lil longer. my next sets will be RS2's (for both the RX8 and the miata) cause they have the size I want in both 15' and 18' and I hear nothing but good things about them as street/canyon tires.....buying 5 sets of tires for the miata a year gets pretty expensive:mad:, and buying 3-4 set for the RX8 on top of that makes it unbearable:vash:....so yeah I've been toning down a bit for cost. The hard thing is finding a deceant tire these days...Azenies are feeling down on grip to me.......guess i need to take a break or start buying R comps.....

miatamania 10-16-2007 10:18 PM

how do you guys go through tires so damn fast?

speedf50 10-16-2007 10:53 PM

Driving like your pubes are on fire.

Arkmage 10-16-2007 10:55 PM

my rs-2s still look new with about 4K miles on them...

Gloko 10-16-2007 10:56 PM

dude....your telling me....I talk to people who are like ..."im soo mad, I only got 20-30k miles outta my last set of tires..."....first thing I respond with is "fuck you man, I only get 6k max, and thats miliking them down to chords"....but running canyons kills tires quick. ...I dont do burnouts and I'm not a Drifter....but full grip driving apparently kills tires.

neogenesis2004 10-16-2007 11:35 PM

amen, I too many fun back roads here in the Appalachians. Funny thing, my right front is worn slightly more than my left front, but both individually are wearing evenly. I must take more left turns fast than right ROFLNASCAR.

So the 215/45/15 size is a better than the 205/50/15? Does it cure this alleged soft sidewall stuff? I like the idea of this in the 215/45/15, or the g-force sport in 205/50/15. I am kind of leaning towards the T1-R now if this particular size will be nice and responsive/grippy.

Can anyone compare these two(T1-R in 215, G-force sport in 205)? Or anyone else used the T1-R in 215/45/15? I rarely hear of people running these.

magnamx-5 10-17-2007 07:57 AM

You have a 7 inch rim why are you totally disregarding the 225 for 10 psi and below it is the perfect width. Past that more tire is needed.

fourwhls 10-17-2007 08:44 AM

Are you wearing these tires out evenly? or wearing out the edges?

Maybe some more camber?

I'm not boosted, and won't be in the immediate future (returned turbo for new car) plus 225 are expensive.

And I am getting relatively even wear, with just a bit more on the inside, which I think may be the toe. I'm running icehawk's specs, so not all that aggressive.

mtncrvr 10-17-2007 10:13 AM

Odd just looked at the T1R secs and aparently they don' have reinforced sidewalls in 215/45/5 (which they did for a looong) time. Now to get that you'd want: 205/50R15 89V RD (RD=reinforced sidewalls) if you're going this route. BTW what 225's fit on 15's?

magnamx-5 10-17-2007 10:17 AM

I dunno my bfg's where 75$ apeice from summit. i ran them NA for a good bit and loved them then aswell.

TonyC 10-17-2007 01:36 PM

shiiiet speedF50.. you live in Malibu? of course you're gonna blow through tires. cuz if i lived ANYWHERE on the west side, i'd be up n down the canyons everyday.

the closest thing i gots is ACH.

that said, i'm completely useless on the tires rec cuz i'm running around on bricks right now. :gay:

speedf50 10-17-2007 06:34 PM

Haha ya, you understand where my tires are going. It's amazing living out here, but damn does it use up gas/tires/every part of the car, especially when me and my friends all live in the canyons, not just by them.

And I was thinking, the BFG g-force sound very good, but I wonder how the t/a KDW's are? From what I can tell they have more grip than the g-force and won't wear that quickly (compared to azenis).

The T1R is also still a good looking option, but I'm a bit worried about the feel of them, but with the re-enforced sidewall, they may be just right. But I was looking forward to a 215/45/15 on these mountain roads for grip on bad surfaces.

So basically I've gotten nowhere. Can anyone compare and contrast these tires from experience? I really appreciate all of the opinions on these, but some experience with the said tires and their pros and cons would also be very much appreciated.

Gloko 10-17-2007 10:55 PM

hmmmmm try and find some 225/50/15 Hankook RS2's....thats what ima run next....cant be that much more then other sets...

speedf50 10-17-2007 11:14 PM

The whole reason I am asking about other tires is that I can't get RS2 and Azeni type tires as I am wearing them out faster than I change oil. So I need to find a longer lasting tire, that is still fun (T1-R, BFG g force or t/a KDW).

Gloko 10-18-2007 03:51 AM

ahhh I hear ya....g-force sports are not too bad....but driving hard on any tire will kill it fast.Ive gone through harder compound tires almost as fast as softs....they might last a lil longer i guess. but 400 treadwears die quick for me too :(......

Marc D 10-18-2007 04:31 AM

SPTs are not that bad of a tire actually. they are a great daily driver tire, and the perfect drift tire as they last long enough and they grip a good amount.

they arent the best for grip though, thats for sure.

Eunos_roadsterna6ce 10-18-2007 04:45 AM

try toyo proxy4 not as expensive as the T1-r and proforms good to me..

Gloko 10-18-2007 11:17 PM

had a set of proxy 4's.....good for sliding. lots of sidewall flex.......loud. but will get the job done I guess..

speedf50 10-19-2007 05:25 AM

Well I'm still stuck between the BFG and Toyo. Between the g-force sport and t/a kdw I think I would opt for the kdw as from talking to a rep at tire rack they sound like they are a bit noisier but have more overall grip. But the difference between those two seems to be minimal.

The Toyo T1-R on the other hand I am still unsure about. I can't figure out if they are a good responsive performance tire, or a squishy sidewall'd mess. I have seen just so many mixed reviews for these that I am a bit lost. Plus I don't know how much the reinforced sidewall model will differ from standard.

And on the proxy 4's and ASX, I think those are a bit too far away from a performance tire for me, as I am looking for better treadwear, but not something quite that mundane.

Gloko 10-20-2007 10:18 PM

try the KDW's....had a set on the miata like...3 or 4 sets ago. Not a bad tire overall. and the wet grip is amazing(who cares I know:jerkit:). medium loudness decent grip, moderate sidewll flex(lasted a bit longer then the azenies)...personally I'd never buy them again. but then again I got a good dealer for tires now:bigtu:....forr the sake of curiosity wat kinda alignmint you running

mtncrvr 10-20-2007 11:42 PM

T1R with reinforced is not squishy at all :-) (but again aparently this is only in 205/50/15 per prev post) But there are lots of good choices in the same price range. I'm loving the azenis - finally got on them hard and was pleasantly surprised at the grip and when they give (very predictable). If you've never run t1r's they're worth a shot - FYI: I only buy them when toyo has their bianual sale (buy 3 get one free). I'm also hearing good things about those hankock (sp?) tires that have almost an exact copy of the T1r tread pattern. You guys got me curios about the BFG's but these are more $ right ? FYI: On proxies both my friend and I ran 32/30psi Front and Rear respectively.

Gloko 10-21-2007 05:51 PM

the thing is he is looking for a tire that will "last" longer then say.. Azenies or RS2's. KDW's are more expensive then Azenies so they are porbablly outta the question. G-force sports are a bit too much for the quality to be honest...I have been in this exact predicament before in the past so I know what Speed is going through...my only advice is dont go cheap cause you will kick yourself through the enitre set for how sucky grip they have.....thats the lesson I learned.

magnamx-5 10-21-2007 08:10 PM

75 bucks a tire when i bought mine. they are 99 now though :td: http://store.summitracing.com/partde...5&autoview=sku 93 bucks from tire rack. http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tires....e1=yes&place=0
Oh well i think i might rock some DR's next anyway. :dunno:

Gloko 10-21-2007 08:37 PM

ouch 93 a piece..... that should equak out to lik 460 or so mounted....thats a bit. I get Azenies for 300 and I get them mounted at some lil shop for like 20-30 bucks..........when ya kill tires fast you tend to find the best deal possible.

speedf50 10-21-2007 10:08 PM

Thanks for the responses.

I don't think I will go with the toyo mainly as the reinforced ones seem to be hard to find, plus they will probably wear out faster than I'd prefer.

What I am really want to know is which of the said tires will yield the longest treadlife out of these tires as I simply CAN'T wear out another set at this rate. With that said I think I will go with the g-force or KDW as they look as if they will last a while, plus the g-force are cheap for me as I don't need 225's (still na, and thats for a while).

Oh and I am running icehawk's alignment.

speedf50 10-22-2007 12:17 AM

Well I think I have found what I need, and it is completely out of the blue. The Falken zeix ze-912 are still UHP tires, and are ok for grip and that good stuff, but mainly they come with a 40,000 mile warranty! So ya, as I have virtually no money these fit the bill nicely, plus they are still a relatively performance based tire.

In the grip vs cash fight, cash has won :D.

speedf50 10-22-2007 12:35 AM

Aww shit. I've just been reading some more reviews of the 912 and people are saying that they suck massive testicles. Can anyone verify this? Damn I thought I was really on to something.

miataspeed1point6 10-22-2007 01:00 AM

My brother has those on his 88 N/A RX-7. He likes em, but I wasn't too impressed.

I have the Toyo T1R's. I have the 195/55/14, which is too fucking small. Overall though they are a very nice tire. They are great in rain, and even in my small size they are pretty sticky.
