TDI Miata......
 

Hello everyone it's been a long since I've been on. I believe the last time I was very active was in 2011 when I had swapped an sr20det into my 13bt powered miata after having two 13b engines fail on me. After selling that car a family and a house followed. So with all that going on there was no time to play around with my miatas until now. I some how ended up getting a TDI and two NA miatas by chance for free.
So short story is I've had a 99.5 MK4 jetta that I said I was going to leave stock but some how went from 90hp and 160tq to 190hp and 350tq. The motor finally failed reason I'm not sure yet but once I knew the motor was done I decided to go for broke. I got myself a PD150 short block from the UK that is stronger then the ALH block here in the states and is able to hold about 300bhp and 450btq. So I got all the parts together and then a few friends of mine all offered me some cars they no longer wanted and or needed.
So now I'm with getting these cars I plan to put my jetta back to mostly stock lol and swap the TDI engine I'm building into one of the two miatas.

I've started to spec out a drivetrain combo that I'll have to mod to fit and work as there's no rwd trans that will bolt up to the TDI block. I've found that the BMW and Benz rear diffs from a good amount of models can be had cheap and in a very low gear ratio 2.6:1 - 3.15:1 with LSD. Also an added benefit is the diff use bolt on axle shafts so I could make an adapter to bolt on shortened miata shafts.

As for the trans I don't really have my heart set on one yet. I've found the RX8 6spd trans to be super cheap and plentiful but 6th gear is a bit too short. I would like to keep my last gear at a .780-.650 If I can. Plan for the trans is to get the bell housing off a passat TDI gear box as the motor sits north to south and graft the TDI bell housing into the new transmission that is selected. One thing that kills me on trans selection is i want a trans with a removable bell housing. This way if it ever goes bad I can just swap the bell housing.
As for the electrical there's very little needed and the great thing about the donor car being a 99.5 is there's immobilizer just power it up and go. The one down side is you can obd2 port flash the ECU you have to flash the chips but that's easy for me.
I'll have some photos and more info in the coming weeks but figure while I have time I'll start a build thread and say hello to some of the people who have been apart of this forum as long as I have.

PS is samnavy and savington still thrashing noobs? I do miss watching those threads.

I'll definitely be watching this thread, I hope it goes somewhere. I had always thought an MR2 or 914 would be better suited for a FWD TDI transplant, but this should be cool too.

Hasnt someone done this already? The same guy that put the geo metro 3 cylinder in a miata IIRC. There's an adapter plate to use a rwd toyota tranny for these motors in like susuki swifts or something dumb like that.

I couldn't find anyone who has done this in a miata yet. There is are a few adapter to run a few rwd trannies but none of which will hold the TQ im going to be making. Also im not a fan of adapters as they require you to space the flywheel off the crank putting more load on the crank.

I think that was a 4BT.

No the 4bt was in a convertible 240sx.

If you were to go this route, your best bet would be to use a w58 from a (non-turbo) supra.

Lol it sure won't be the fastest miata I've owned but should be faster then a stock miata seeing as the motor I'm building should make about 250hp and 450tq with a 5k redline.

Yeah I thought of going that route but I can build a bell housing cheaper that will use a stock TDI starter.

That 4bt miata is atrocious. I've thought about putting an alh tdi engine in an na but I doubt I ever will.

Here are some photos of the new parts I got from the UK. Custom GTB2060V, custom 12mm injection pump with 300tdi cam plate and .310 nozzles.

I also scored a deal on a trans and a rear diff. I decided on the T5 trans for a few reasons. First the gearing worked perfect. Next the bell housing is removable. Also if needed I could upgrade the trans cheap. The one I found is a 1352-249 it turns out to be a Ford motorsports transmission so it's stronger then the normal mustang t5.

As for the diff I picked up a clean fresh from Japan 350z auto lsd diff with 3.357 gears. Best part about these diffs is the axles from the factor are bolt on axles so I can make adapters to make the miata axles bolt to them I would just need to shorten the miata axle shafts.

65mph should be around 2000rpm with the T5 trans and the 350z rear did. Max speed should be around 140mph.

So last night I scored another deal, I bought a Miller syncrowave 300 for 400 bucks. Everything works but the guy wanted to keep the torch but that's was fine with me. ALH wheeee! I've owned a few TDIs, that turbo is way bigger than the 17/22 I had back in the day. good luck with the build!

Thanks and it's also a ball bearing vnt turbo so it should spool very fast.
