That's right, another Rx7 diff question

I currently am in possesion of a 1.8 open assembly (w/ stubshafts) & a driveshaft.

I'm looking to drop in an lsd unit.

I was able to fiind a great deal on a 1987-1992 GXL Clutch-Type LSD with halfshafts. I've been reading through solo miata and trying to see if the halfshafts off the rx7 will work.

...in 1994...The stub shaft flange is also larger to the same size as the 86-91 RX-7 (to 4x110mm from 4x100mm). The hub spline stayed the same at 26 spline by 27mm. The diff side splines are also 26 spline by 27mm.

The 86-91 NA RX-7 halfshaft is similar to the 94+ Miata halfshaft with the same ~25.25" length and the same 94/95 Miata stub shaft bolt pattern of 4x110 but it uses a larger hub shaft diameter of 28 spline by 29mm
They look to be the same length and the stubshafts are the same, however the hub side might not fit and I'll still need to find miata specific halfshafts. Can anyone confirm this? Or do I just need to find two 94-95 halfshafts and I'm done.

just get me a lsd already staller. :P i dunno about the dimensions of the halfshafts though might just need to bite the bullet and get some 1.8 shafts.

I never tried to use RX7 shafts, but it seemed very clear to me (in that part you posted) that the rx7 halfshafts will not work with miata hubs.

The way I finally got my halfshafts was by calling about 20 places on the car-parts.com list. 3 times i ordered some and was called back the next day saying they were unusable. $140 shipped.

Rich, when this deal goes through I'll tell you the source ;)

sweet thanx bro.

brainsy, why dont you just pop out the stub shafts from the diff you have? get new clips and new seals.

bripab007 01-21-2007 07:40 PM

No, I don't believe the RX-7 half-shafts are the right length. They're probably too long...the RX-7 is a wider car than the Miata.

You can, however, use either the RX-7 stub shafts or the Miata stub-shafts, as long as you use the RX-7 cir-clips in either scenario and also use the diff. seals specific to the stub shaft you choose to use.

Braineack 01-21-2007 07:57 PM

yeah. Just clarifying, the guy who I'm talking to said they'll work, but from what solomiata says, they won't. I'm going to err on miata specific halfshafts and call it a day, although if this deal goes through then it will make my conversion even happier on the wallet. ;)

It's not the stubs I'm worried about it's the halfshafts. He said he'd include them and I was hoping they'd fit. It would make my conversion very very cheap. I'm just a cheap ass. That's all.

y8s 01-21-2007 09:10 PM

do your halfshafts not fit the stubs?

Braineack 01-21-2007 09:56 PM

i aint got none yet. just the rear assembly with stubs.

y8s 01-22-2007 02:11 PM

what's in your car I mean.

also the 2001 entire shaft (hub to diff guts) fits with the '7 clip.

bripab007 01-22-2007 02:32 PM

He's got a 1.6L liter, so nothing currently in his car will work with the swap. Yes, I already told him a while back to just get one-piece '95.5+ half-shafts because they're so much easier to find. 9 years worth of cars from which to find parts vs. 1.5 years.

Braineack 01-22-2007 02:34 PM

i actually just found them w/ABS for $135 shipped

y8s 01-22-2007 05:23 PM

bingo. new clips mang!
