Is there a water temp gauge that's not ground senstive and accurate?

I want a dirt cheap, simple gauge that is accurate, uses a single-wire sender, and preferably black. I must be either full-sweep or digital.

VEI is shit and can felch my rectum.

hustler 07-27-2013 06:09 PM

Oh, and the gauge needs to be as poverty as possible because cars are stupid and I like bicycles now.

Seefo 07-28-2013 03:08 AM

whats wrong with the stock one? You can mod the stock gauge so its linear (or pretty damn close).

I am happy with my VDO sensors so far.

shuiend 07-28-2013 07:57 AM

Check the wires from the sensor to the gauge. When I installed my MXT-L a few weeks ago I noticed my wires had been rubbed through and were probably touching my frame. I think that is why mine was reading off. See if that is causing yours to be off.

VDO Vision - in the stock the stock location at the back of the head. You'll need to run an NPT tap through the threads. Not sure how much fun that's going to be with the engine in the car.

there is a pictured guide that might be easier for hustler. you can google it, its on m.net I think.

My shit is already tapped for it.

All new wiring from the swap last January.

I want real information, not "oh it's kinda, sorta like 210, maybe 215*f, maybe blown-up. I don't have the time or energy to solder shit on a board for the first time in my life and make mistakes.

Jeffman's VDO gauges are just as crappy and broken as the ones I had in the VW, plus I want full-sweep.

I'm probably getting the AEM one from TSE unless anyone has a better idea.

You did say cheap. Where are the cheap, full sweep AEM gauges?

There are so few decent full-sweep gauges, and I'm so happy with the AEM UEGO WB gauge, that I'll spend the money I guess.

nitrodann 07-29-2013 03:28 AM

Better.

I just really like the programmable alarms for high water temp.

Those aren't TERRIBLE gauges, but they're HIGHLY ground sensitive.

I ran dedicated grounds for mine to new spots on the chassis very close to the battery, and when i turn on my headlights, my water temps "magically" jump up 10F.

Oh yeah, what a pain in the ass. I'd rather sever my cock than deal with ground-offset bullshit, incredulity. AEM from TSE it is.

I also don't feel like grounding them directly to the battery, so...

I'm going to sell them and get to sourcing new senders for my 20 year old HKS gauges and i'll just use those.

JasonC SBB 07-29-2013 07:14 PM

What you need to do is to ground the gauge in the same place as the sender. If it's a 1-wire sender then you ground the gauge to the block.

Full_Tilt_Boogie 07-29-2013 07:27 PM

Mechanical, yo.

... And yet it still doesn't work. I'm not fucking with it anymore, buy buy buy.

Mechanical gauge is probably what u're looking for.

Yep.

Other than the big drawback of having to run large lines into the cabin of the car, mechanical gauges are awesome.

triple88a 07-29-2013 11:03 PM

Not really, the water line is already going through the driver side so just gotta intercept it.

Mechanical temp gauges use thermocouples (like a heat pipe). Not to be confused with thermocouples (2 dissimilar metals joined that make a varying voltage offset proportional to temperature).

Agreed. No wiring, no shorts, it will tell you the temperature without having to turn the key on :D, no sending unit to fail. Just make sure you don't put too sharp of bends in it, it will break the core. The only electric gauge I have is my wideband. Better watch out for those mechanical lines though, they might EXPLODE :crx:

And mechanical gauges can be had for cheap anywhere from O'Riellys, Autozone, PepBoys, Summit and they are usually going to be very accurate.

Leafy 07-30-2013 11:15 AM

Yeah I think I'm going to be switching to all mechanical gauges (besides oil pressure). I used to be all gungho electrical but my electrical boost gauge is starting to not work all the time and shit and its pissing me off. The mechanical VDO in the subie is stone reliable and moves faster than the electric one.

JKav 07-30-2013 02:02 PM

Mechanical temp gauges generally use a bourdon tube, which is large and kink-sensitive (the tube has to be routed carefully with a min bend radius and if you split the tube you throw the whole shebang away and buy a new one). The bulb at the business end is also large/bulky. They're accurate but sort of a pain in the ass.

I was originally going to say mechanical but I figured Mr. Baller would cry about it not being shiny enough. Ballers like shiny things.
