Throttle Body Coolant Passage

With all the trouble that people go to in installing an intercooler, I wonder why many people don't remove the coolant lines that go to the intake manifold? Has anyone disconnected theirs and have they seen any gains from doing so?

wes65 02-13-2008 06:45 PM

from what ive seen the gains are negligible. It is mainly there just to keep ice from forming on the TB and the air doesnt spend enough time in the TB to make a difference.

The_Pipefather 02-13-2008 06:53 PM

But its not just the TB that's heated, its the entire plenum. I'm pretty sure there's as much volume in there as a good-sized intercooler. Removing those lines should theoretically yield atleast a 5 or 10 degree drop in intake temps right?

Unless I'm missing something here.......to my knowledge there is no valve which controls flow of coolant into the manifold jacket. In other words coolant is always circulating through there.

Ive tried it, the car will not idle hot worth a damn

y8s 02-13-2008 07:21 PM

surface area to volume is very small in the plenum compared to an intercooler... and yeah the icing.

UrbanSoot 02-13-2008 08:39 PM

did anyone try to route a/c through intake manifold? :)

Mach929 02-13-2008 08:44 PM

i removed mine, just take the coolant line from the thermostat housing and cut it and end it at the head bypassing the intake manifold and throttle body. I run an mspnp so i don't think it's at all necessary. the more stuff you can take out and don't need the better

The_Pipefather 02-13-2008 09:00 PM

Did you notice any problems in cold weather?

levnubhin 02-13-2008 09:48 PM

I removed mine. Didnt notice any difference anywhere. I just did it to make getting to the injectors easier.

because you have to remove or plug the wax valve, first!
then an aftermarket ECU to control the idle because the stock one expects the wax valve.

(all this is for NA)

paul 02-14-2008 01:14 AM

btw, its only the 1.6's that have the coolant running through the intake manifold.

j_man, what's a wax valve? Where is it located?

viciousclipse 02-14-2008 10:27 AM

and the dyno sheet is for a camaro.

Braineack 02-14-2008 10:36 AM

I need the car to run right on the stock ECU once a year for an e-check, so this mod is out for me.

Braineack 02-14-2008 10:56 AM

wax valve?! wtf.

all you have to do is plug the line from the IM and the line from the water neck....the end.

you can block and remove the AIR valve if you want like i posted above...this will not fail your emissions....
