Timing jumps
I have a 96 na miata. I just turboed it and have a mspnp2. I first tried to start car and timing was off. I adjusted time and idle and it wouldn't start. I checked the timing and it was off again. Did this multiple times. Belt has all teeth in good condition. Crank timing pulley is good and key is good. Cant find out the problem.
only have downpipe on turbo, intercooler, GM iat. thanks in advance |
How are you adjusting timing?

The belt is jumping everytime you try and start it? Does it skip teeth if you crank over the motor by hand with a breaker bar? Also the motor has to make 4 IIRC* revs before the timing marks line up again (someone will have to confirm this for me)
Turning it with a breaker bar doesnt seem to make it jump teeth. And i thought it was 2 rotations to be right again

Is the adjustable timing belt idler (tensioner) adjusted properly? It is possible to be torqued down too loose if all of the slack wasn't taken up between the other gears before tightening. The little spring doesn't work as well after 20 years of tension. |

tl;dr i.e. you never locked the timing to a static number ... |
I replaced the spring with a new one, made sure the tensioner was tight enough to not move but didnt check specs to tighten it. And what do you mean lock it to a static number. Am I missing a step with the process to lock it. I thought this put it at 10 and set it there
you are most definitely missing the step of locking it at 10*
is it jumping by about 4-6*? |
Its jumping enough to where the car will die and wont start back up. How do I go about locking the timing
its not the timing jumping that's causing the car to stall, it's the complete lack of fuel tuning...
When I physically check the timing after it dies it seems to be different from where it was set
I'm not sure if I set it to fixed or not. I'll check when I get back to the car tonight
