Trailer hitch plus monster magnaflow: success or fail
is anyone running the mt.net favorite larger 22" magnaflow muffler successfully with an FM or similar trailer hitch?
im talking with Abe about getting one of his three inch exhausts on my NB and having some concerns. Pics would be great if anyone has this. Or just reassurance that there is space for both |
Yep, I've got a hitch and a 3" exhaust w/ 5x11x22 magnaflow. Its not the FM hitch but it is a hitch. Pics are somewhere in my build thread as part of the exhaust build. I'll see if I can find them or you are welcome to take a peek.
Protip: change your forum settings to max number of posts per page, there are a LOT of pages in that thread :giggle: |
If you do, google search will be useless. You'll be looking for a specific post, google thinks it's on page 20 and takes you there. For you, it's on page 2.
Unless it's been fixed? |
if the stock muffler clears it, the maggie should clear it.
|
I am almost positive with how I mount the big ass muffler at least on the NB, that the FM hitch does not work. If you are custom building the exhaust then you could probably make it work.
|
Shuiend-you said 'with the way you mount them' but do you think there is room to locate the muffler closer to the diff to make it work? Or no chance?
if I just go with the smaller common magnaflow option does that definitely fit I assume? I was really hoping for maximum quiet but will drop in size if necessary. |

Would cutting the magnaflow be a bad idea? I wonder how big of a deal it would be to cut the muffler along the red line (looking at the inlet side view) and weld back in a flat wall. Or just use my engineering hammer to encourage a little more clearance..

Cutting might cause problems with how the airflow pipes in it go, also making one cut there would probably be a royal PITA.
|
yeah that's what I figured, just thought I would throw that idea out there.
I'm thinking I may need to just go with the smaller standard magnaflow. I know its pretty subjective, but how much louder is the smaller muffler than the larger one when paired with a cat and resonator? from what I read, the larger is 2 perforated pipes inside where the smaller is one perforated pipe. |
with a resonator and cat, even using a slightly smaller Maggie, it should still be ok.
I say you get under there and start measuring vs just guessing and theorizing in a thread. the way lars mounts his setups is not how I would mount my setups so it's not the only way nor is it the best way, it's just the simplest/easiest/most convenient for him. |
Too bad
https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1432004457 the Big Magnaflow https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1432004457 does not fit https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1432004457 with a hitch... |
Fits great with that little cheater bend in there :p
|
Thanks EO2K! I'm forwarding these to Abe.

Post #1177 in my build thread has more pics :bigtu:

Grape jelly is the most jelly.
|
Grape is a sin against the laws of nature. Grapes are either fed to scantily clad women or used to make wine, no other use is acceptable.
http://vignette3.wikia.nocookie.net/...smbot_2-4-.jpg You start making jelly out of grapes and its just a slippery slope to orange marmalade :barf: |
What if I'm at the meatball level of grape jelly?

Lol. Take note of the drivers side rear 4th hanger we added. We used one of these kagiggers on the chassis in an existing hole for a mount:
https://images-na.ssl-images-amazon....L._SL1500_.jpg It very much constrains the movement of the muffler compared to the oem hangars. This is a good thing. |
