Then why do all the top tuners around here do this?

Cause they are all idiots.

If that worked every major racing team would have a billion spark plugs run to redline and pull them, but we all know this isnt the case. Could you imagine the money companies would save by tuning by sparkplugs.

If there was a reliable effective way to tune a car without investing in expensive equipment everyone would be on it.

I can't tell you why those guys told you they tune that way, you should ask them.

Could tuning by looking at plugs tell you this:

or this:

There's a reason people pay good money for datalogging equipment.

My dad used to tune by reading spark plugs....

on his 1950's vintage porsche.

I'm not sure what you are after Dean. You are arguing that it's a valid method of tuning, but you are only basing this on what the "top tuners" in the city have told you. If you beleive them why are you asking here?

Give ole Corky Bell a call and ask him what he thinks. He's well respected and certainly old school.

Well being as these guys are running some pretty fast cars I can't see why we are in sorry shape?

Miata's don't make the best drag car....even still a 10sec Talon will need 30+ pounds of boost. If we could easily run 30lbs. we would.

A poorly tuned car can still be quick, even though it may not be up to its full potential.

I wonder how many motors some of these tuners have destroyed on their quest for 1/4 times?

We are in sorry shape because people are telling you the better way to tune is via spark plug inspection. I want to know if the plug can tell me if I'm running 14:1 AFR or 12:1 AFR accurately. That's could be the difference between a good tune and boom. How about EGT? Knock?
