a friend of mine (who is now a lawyer for the HRC) kept calling them that and I had to correct him. he's not gay but his organization is. and I guess so is his dentist.
but anyway, logic it out: chaps are for protection from plants while riding a horse. unless you ride a horse backwards with your ass hanging off, I think you dont need thick leather protection on it.
