Default ? about my turbo

I have a turbo system that I bought from Flyin Miata about 5 years ago. I bought it as a BEGI 4.1 kit. It was at a time when FM had just introduced the option of choosing a ball bearing turbo (for an up charge). My paper work indicates it's a T28. I've asked them before for more info on it and they weren't very helpful. It has a sleeve bearing. I am in the process of replacing my worn out (rings) 1.6 with a 1994 1.8. I also have a link ecu. Does anyone know how much HP this turbo is good for without being to overworked. I talked to Corky about it briefly and he seemed to think it was a good turbo for the miata and he seemed to like the sleeve bearing. Anyways I already have purchased one of Corky's new manifolds for a 1.8 for a t25/28 turbo. I have about 1,500 left to spend. I know I want one of his downpipes so thats another 400 leaving 1,000. Is there a better turbo than what I have. would it be worth it to change, mine is working fine with no shaft play.

Michael

fm has posted a 1.8 with a link ecu and t28 is good for 250hp. so figure out your horsepower goal.

Keep the turbo and run it till it dies, spend the money on something else, like gas cause you'll be using plenty of it with the new kit. Or get into some water injection that would work well with your system once you have the bugs worked out that's less than $200 though.

Torsen rear if you haven't done it already.

T28 is a good turbo. I was going to do either that or a T25 for my DIY setup once I finally get the money. Use the $1000 for a Torsen rear-end.

No, that turbo is fine. I'd run it and not worry about the fact it's a sleeve-bearing. Don't get caught up in the "ball-bearing turbos, FTW!!!" marketing crap that some vendors/forums/tuners/people/etc. spew.

Yes, the BB version of the T28 will likely spool a bit faster, but it's not going to be a night-and-day thing.

Yup, the T28 is a perfect match for the Miata engine. It spools really low, (10psi avail in the low 3's) and has the headroom to run's efficient up to the 16psi range.

I agree with the others. Keep the turbo. If it's starting to show it's age, spring for a rebuild kit ($75 and an hour of your time). Regular turbos are good for 100,000 miles if properly maintained, BB turbos give you an extra few percent of performance for double the price.

Tune your setup for 13-14psi at around 250rwhp, and wait for your dif to blow... then upgrade to Torsen.

Questions: What kind of clutch are you running? Have you done a 1.8 brake swap, or braided lines/pads? Motor mounts?

Thanks for the replys. I have a torsen in . I have an ACT xtreme 1.6 size now.I used to have a SPEC 4 puck that I sold/gave to I believe Andy Floyd. I guess reading all the people hitting 290-300 HP has me wanting more. I believe the best I ever had it tuned on the 1.6 was 250 @ 15psi per datalogs. I used to have a vishnu fuel rail but I sold it when I decided to put the 1.8 in. I have a set of toyota supra turbo black tops in 430cc/min. I know I want BEGI's downpipe. I need to decide what I'm going to do with connecting the turbo to the intercooler and whether or not I will change the intercooler.
