Vibrating like Hustly's favorite toy

Dear sirs,

I am running into an issue that has me scratching my head. My Miata is vibrating like Hustly's favorite toy, and even at idle, I'm getting some fairly gnarly vibration.

It's impossible for me to take past, say, 4k rpm due simply to insane vibration. I've checked or am checking/will have checked the obvious stuff, so help me out with the non-obvious stuff to check out please!

I've reverted to the stock flywheel (resurfaced) w/the FM clutch kit now, and am not sure where to start beyond that.

Collapsed engine mount causing exhaust to rub?

Bond 04-07-2012 12:43 PM

Engine mount, or you lost a bolt(s) on the PPF.

Fuuu, good idea Hustly. The clearance on the exhaust is iffy, I'll check that out - although I have brand new mazdaspeed engine mounts in there :(.

Brand new mounts, I'll check the PPF stuff.

I just went over to RHarris' place and he made a spacer so my header would stop hitting the subframe and now I'm sane again.

I'll take a close look at exhaust clearance today Hustly, thank you.

My exhaust is so hacked up at this point that it may be time just to bite the bullet and buy a Garrett turbo plus an Abe downpipe+exhaust.

Make sure all the bolts on your power plant frame are torqued to 200ft lbs. Seriously, factory spec is liek 150lbs or soemthing.

Also make sure you are firing on all cylinders

Are you focking serious? SERIOUSLY?!? Can someone else verify this for me, because I just don't know. 200ftlbs sounds like a good number to break a bolt at.

I may be having issues with one cylinder, not spark, but fuel. I'm going to test it more extensively later.

Faeflora 04-07-2012 02:24 PM

125ft lbs.

https://sites.google.com/a/philb.us/...torque-specifi

to fix your fuel problem, pull your injector and hit it with a hammer.

blaen99 04-07-2012 02:26 PM

Jeebus cripes, ~100 ftlbs still seems like an awful lot as per that site, but I'll make sure they are all torqued down nicely when I get a chance to get back under it. Wow, that's some serious torque on those bolts.

Also, not a fuel injector problem after all. Injectors are in perfect shape, it was a problem with my injector wiring goddamnit so much. I've never had problems in my wiring before.

blaen99 04-07-2012 05:52 PM

Oh good god. I'm a ------- retard.

I forgot to final tighten the motor mounts down, 10 ftlbs ain't gonna hold ----.

blaen99 04-07-2012 06:29 PM

Torqued it all down to proper torque specs, time to see if it doesn't vibrate like a ----------er anymore.

Dude, it felt like I was trying to when I revved it with only loosely tightened motor mounts, good god.

"Diesel powered vibrator" is the only phrase that comes to mind of equivalent vibrating.

Sounds like your balance shaft belt has broken.

At least we know when the engines terrible harmonics kick in. 4000rpm apparently.
