Want To Run The Widest Tires On My 90 Miata

hi i have a 90 miata and want to run thw widest tires i can with out having to do too much wheel well work and fender rolling and i want to run 15 16 or 17 and i would like to get at least 225 or 235 wide tires and the shortest side walls

patsmx5 04-16-2008 11:56 PM

the 6ul's in Nickel finish are absolutely beautiful. I got mine in last week. I can't WAIT until the bodywork is done so I can put them on. :D

1990miata1.6 04-17-2008 12:36 AM

I highly recommend the Hankook RS2's. I just put a set on my Civic this weekend (DSP autocross prepped car), and man do they stick to the road. If my miata was going to be a street-driven car, they would be my tire of choice for it as well.

samnavy 04-17-2008 12:56 AM

The first thing that happens when guys go to wide sticky rubber on a 1.6 is that they break the dif. Add a turbo to that equation and you're going to need an upgrade quickly.

1990miata1.6 04-18-2008 10:46 AM

i changed the 1.6 diff to the 1.8 and i have the 6 speed trany for it

Zabac 04-18-2008 10:56 AM

Really dude, use the shift key and proper grammar, at least in longer sentences, this is not CRnet, you WILL get banned, mods here don't tolerate that unless you give them buttsex. :gay:
Don't get 16's or 17's if you are performance oriented. Get some wide 15's (x7, x7.5, x8) and you'll be good for some 225's, bigger than that you will proboably need to do either flares or some major rolling. For that you are better of at CRnet, should be lots of info over there.

"cuz"? Seriously? Use punctuation, ------. I'm sure you're laughing right now thinking I'm just some guy from the internet bet let me tell you now boy you pissed off the wrong motherfucker. I've had training with any team of spec ops warriors you can think of. I'm already one of the best in my state in clandestine ops and I can hit a dinner plate at 350yards with a H&K Mark 23 mod 0 .45 caliber pistol. My uncle infiltrated the secret Egyptian Commando group called Thunderbolt 777 and nobody even noticed him. He trained with them and even did HALO jumps in the Sinai with them and he didn't even know how to speak Arabic. This isn't me bragging, this is just to tell you that you're messing with one of the baddest motherfuckers in the country.

Newbsauce 04-18-2008 02:15 PM

High offset you can fit a 225/45 but it will be close With a low offset from 15-0 you will need a pretty good roll or flares. You probably will not find a 235 in a 15", most sizes are 225/45 or 50 and a 275/35 in race compound. Hope this helps.

quick question for the folks mentioning the 15x8's and the ventus in 225. those are spec'd for a 7.5" rim. was just wondering if anyone's seen them on both an 8 and a 7.5 and if i'm just completely splitting hairs being curious about it :-)

Zabac 04-18-2008 02:52 PM

i have never seen a tire specd out for only one size, usually it's a range, ex: 7"-8"

i just talked to Edgeracing, they should have the R888 very soon at an even better price, maybe by end of month

devin mac 04-18-2008 02:57 PM

yeah, they are assigned a range, but there's an ideal size that it's designed for and the range is usually +/- .5" or something like that, depending on sidewall height. i'm just splitting hairs, i suppose :-)

You do realize it is a R-comp right?

yeah, what's the problem? It's pretty damn cheap for a DOT R

225/45 NT-01's and RA1's are cheaper.

Was just making sure you were not confusing the R888 with the new R1R street tire.

Zabac 04-18-2008 03:49 PM

but i'm sure it's also better, i saw goodwin is selling them as well and using them on their track miata

Don't take this the wrong way but you need to not take some grammer and punctuation miss usage that far. Let's see you stand in the freezing cold for 7 hours and drop a deer 200 yards out with a rifle set for 100 yards or hit A 1x1 box 120 yards standing with no scope only irons and do it on the first shot ass. so next time give a noob a break

Come on man, he was clearly making a joke.
To respond in such a serious manner either means you're really young, really insecure, or just a total prick... or all three.

Helpful hints if you want to start over.
When you join a forum, be sure that your first post is in the NOOB section or whatever it's called... here it's called "meet&greet". Make sure you highlight your vehicle, experiences, goals, and anything you think may be useful to others. I know CT is a small state, but listing your city would be extremely helpful. Also adding a short list of mods/setup to your signature would dramatically improve all advice given to you since people wouldn't have to ask questions... like reminding you to upgrade your dif... OH, you've already done that... wouldn't that have been nice to know and I wouldn't have had to post the suggestion.

And to put everything in perspective, you are getting some really good advice in this thread... and the only thing you focused on was the bullshit. Either grow a sack or go away.

And you can start by REALLY reading the advice and tell us is we've helped narrow things down and what you're thinking about buying.

For pure performance, a 225 15" is hard to beat unless you're running stupid power. Going to a 17" only adds A LOT of unsprung weight. IMHO, 17" rims look out of place on a Miata. I've driven a Miata on 17" rims and the difference is remarkable... everything about the car just slows down. 16"s area nice compromise if you've got a hard-on for the "look" of bigger rims... they're a little heavier, but allow more contact patch. You really need to decide if performance or looks is more important. If it's performance, what do you need the tire to do?

I'm running 15" Konig Heliums and 195 T1r's and it's a great package for the street. I'm way short on rubber for autocross and in deep trouble on an open track, but the price and mileage is right on the money. 205 Azenis are next.

1990miata1.6 04-19-2008 12:11 AM

well young but i do take things too seriously im new and not sure if people are joking or serious so yaaaa. but i am thankful for the good info people have given me and im planing on running 300 om my motor. the motor has been built i found a guy that is selling his t3 turbo header and intercooler and im planning on buying it and then running megasuirts pnp. so im thinking of running the 15's or 16's

I've driven both tires. The RS2 is stickier and holds up better to hard use. Unfortunately, it's a little loud on the highway. But an okay tradeoff for a really cheap, pretty good street tire. I'm looking forward to some more companies jumping on this size bandwagon with street tires, like KDW, PE2, g-Force Sport, RT-615, Neova, etc. I guess with a turbo 1.6 that's not a commuter, running RA1s or NT-01s on the street would be livable.

In general, a wider wheel will provide better lateral grip and more precise and responsive handling, at the sacrifice of ride quality. I like a 225 on at least an 8" wheel, and 8.5 is even better, but not available for a Miata. 9" is about the max for a 225, and a bit of a stretch for most.

1. most people say the RE-01R is a bit grippier than the R-S2
2. you have a pretty big vagina if you think the R-S2 is loud on the highway. Try an NT-01 sometime, sounds like there's swampers on the car.

1. Okay, my bad, I thought the poster I was responding to meant T1-R. That's a hell of a lot closer to R1R than RE-01R. Yeah, the Bridgestone is a lot more aggressive than the Hankook. Duh.

2. I've used up NT-01s, A032s, PS2s and a few others. So I know what loud and quiet are. What does that have to do with the size of my vagina?

el funny, amigo. el funny. I really didn't think the R-S2s were that bad on the highway, though. Certainly nowhere near the NT-01s.

what about the toyo t1r 245/35/16 thats what goodwin sells. i would love that tire on a 16x8 inch rim. i have 16x7 with some falken 452 with 215/40/16 and they are great i have 200whp and i got a 13.5 at 101 with my old 451. the 452 are way better. this is my daily driver so i need some thing that will last. but i love the way the tire hold the road and are the best tire i have owned for the price $90.

Enkei RPF1 16X8 and Toyo T1R 245-35-16.

Kosei K1 17X7.5 and Goodyear Eagle F1 245-35-17.

Anything over 245 and it's not gonna be close to working with your speedo or be too tall to fit in the fenders.

Braineack 09-08-2008 04:31 PM

hmm, i'm sure they are recommended for a 8-8.5-9" rim, but wonder if they'd fit on a 7.5" rim :)

locomonkeyboricua 09-09-2008 05:45 PM

i had 205/45/16 toyo t1r and the falken 452 in the size 215/40/16 are about the exact same height. so it does not look like a super slim side wall because of the 215 aspect you gain some height. so if you look at the 215 40, and a 205 45, the side walls look the same. i would say go for it and get some 215 40. i love them on my miata. The side walls are stiff but the falken 452 are super quite.

locomonkeyboricua 09-09-2008 05:59 PM

funny thing about those falkens, the tire guy that mounted the tires said," it was the worst time he ever had mounting tires because the sidewalls were so stiff". he said it took him over 2 hours to do all 4 and i know it was not BS because when my buddy at sears did them he said the same thing.

I run a 215/40/16 Falken FK451 tire on my 7.5in wheels. Looks great imo, there is plenty of sidewall.

Uploaded just for you brainy.

Although the car is fugly in that pic, it looks WAY better now on ground controls.

Braineack 09-09-2008 07:52 PM

yeah that looks about the same as my 205s, they are a touch smaller in diameter but should match factory sizing.

Fireindc 09-09-2008 08:50 PM

They look comparable, my tires sidewalls don't look any smaller.
