Water in trunk, help keeping it out.
I've got water in my trunk, the carpet was soaking wet on the bottom. There was condensation on the trunk lid and on the trunk walls, there is no rust or mold so I know it hasn't been there for long. I toke the carpet out, dried everything out and now it's raining again and the trunk has some water in it, it's been raining all day but there isn't near as much moisture as there was. Any ideas as to where the water is getting in? It looks as if the weatherstripping is doing it's job so I'm curious as to how the water is where it is. Also, I replaced the top a few months ago. Thanks.
Edit: The plugs are still in the trunk, I'll take them out but I'm worried about them rusting here in the coming winter months due to road salt |
Tail lights? Antenna? Mischievous neighborhood youth?

I hadn't thought of the tail lights or antenna, I'll check them out. If any kids ever went NEAR my car it would be a bad day for them.

There's also that drain line in the fuel filler well. Not entirely sure where the hose is routed (never needed to look at it.)
Is the wetness localized in one specific area? |
Underneath the carpet in the trunk is a drain plug. You can unplug that and water will be able to drain out. Do you have any cuts or rips in your top? I know with rips in my back window in both my NA's I get rain in the trunk and I assume it is from there.

Make sure you installed the rain rail with your new top correctly. I had a pond in my trunk that was from the antenna leaking and a bad rain rail.

rain rail, clogged drains, etc.

+1 on rain rail, I did my top kinda recently as well. well, long enough ago, but it just recently started raining enough for me to notice. I have all of the same symptoms as you. pull the carpet where the soft top goes, and put a garden hose on the roof to see if you see water seeping in past the rain rail.
Also, this is my thread on the issue: http://www.miataforumz.com/showthread.php?t=495 |
I was (and am) really hoping that it isn't the rain rail, but I know there it probably is. I haven't noticed moisture like this before, and it's been several months and several hard rains since the new top was installed. I'll peel back the carpet and see if I can see some moisture tomorrow if I can.

Mine fills up in the left recess. Opposite of the battery well. Water runs down the trunk surround, down the back, and dribbles past the taillight seals. I doubled up the tail light seals "had an extra set" and worked for about a year. Now I run it with the plugs pulled and it just drains. Some silicon would fix it or new seals. I'm in TN so the road salt isn't a problem yet and I almost never use the trunk anyway. Jeep is for groceries.
