what class for autox would I be?
 

hay gang...

heres my question, Im planning on starting autox after Im finished with my turbo setup. but what class would I be?

I have agx/gc, rollbar, wheels, gutted interior and trunk, turbo + acc...

I could look but I figured someone here prolly has a similar setup and does autox or might just know.

Probably SM2, not sure about the gutted interior though.

If the event coordinator is feeling generous they let me run as EM. If not, am stuck in SM. In either event will get your butt kicked badly in the PAX. To add insult to injury, after 12 years and at least 75 autocross days with a turbo can still run most typical tight courses from 1-4 seconds faster in a stock Miata.

should be SM2. Have fun against the decked out Z06's

I didn't think you could gut a car in SM2? We run a different version of the car prep rules than the SCCA, we don't have SM2. I get to play in CSP, but after that it's to DMOD. A good driver can kick my ass all day long, but since putting the turbo on my car I place much better than I did previously.

Are you going to autocross to compete for season points? If your goal is just to go out and have fun to see what you and the car can do, it really doesn't matter what class you're in. I run STS2 with a bunch of illegal crap, but nobody cares because I show up once a month and usually place last. When you go to get your car tech'd, just ask the dude and he'll tell you.

I just like to see how I rank in with the Evo's and WRX's... usually mid-pack.

But yah, with all the mods, whatever class you're really supposed to be in will be way over your head.

You can just do "time only" runs, doesn't matter what mods you got, but you don't get a trophy. Well it's a lot harder to drive a boosted miata on a auto-x, you just end up sliding every corner which means bad times but tons of fun!

That's not entirely true, that a turbo miata is really that difficult to drive. If you are smooth it isn't that bad. You have to get on the gas a little earlier and not just mash the happy pedal all the time. I find that I'm usually in boost almost all the time, given the size of our lot and the way the course is designed. The biggest issue I had at my first and second event after installing the turbo is braking. I accelerate so much quicker but in the heat of battle I wasn't fully aware of how much faster and wasn't adjusting my braking zones. Resulted in a lot of dead cones. Especially in the stop box. I used to be able to stand on the gas right to the begining of the stop box, now not so much.

Granted you aren't going to go toe to toe with top level drivers is really well prepared cars, but you can be competitive on a local level (unless those really good drivers are local to you).

Last event I was about 2sec slower than a 2001 BRP M62 miata that is very well prepared for Canadian CSP. The driver of the car had oten won FTD in our area, so he had me on talent by a LONG shot. He was also on V710's while I was on OLD RA-1's. Where before the Turbo I would have normally been mid pack at best, now I'm getting a handle on the car I'm doing top 10 finishes. Our level of competition isn't at the same level SCCA (Our season lasts May to September, and usually only see 35-50 drivers per event).

Our car classing system is way more friendly to FI than SCCA rules, while some of the rules are practically the same we have Stock/Super Stock/Street Prepared/Mod. So there is a lot you can legally get away with in SP.

Here is a picture from the last event. Ironically this was my final and fastest run of the day. The helicopter followed about 1/2 of my run, I had no idea he was there until he did a really low flyby over me at the end of the course.

Our events are held on a semi-active airforce base (main runway is 10000ft long, used to be an alternate landing for the Shuttle). Course size is limited mostly by the number of people, not enough marshals ;)

Im just going out to have fun, I dont care about points or anything... I just need somewhere to stretch my legs that isnt 3 hours away at the closest track. its basicly due to the lack of drift events in town...

I have 0 experience with autox and I have no idea about how things work. I didnt even know if you could just go out for times. I just thought about it and posted... :P

Yeah dude, just do it for fun. I did like 2-3 autocrosses so far, and I know I'm not gonna get good times, it's just a place to drive and have fun. And first 3 autocrosses I think you will be in the novice class, then you can decide which class or whatever you want to do.
